🎨"2021 Family Art Therapy Week 17" SHARING/COMPARTIR with Ms. Mandi, BSW🎨

2021- FAMILY ART-THERAPY WEEK 17

This weeks projects are going to be related to the Positive Action Word of the Week- SHARING

A sharing person is generous and willing to share. If you are sharing, you are

glad to give things to others. To share something is to use it or enjoy it with

others, like when people share a cake at a birthday party, or you let a

classmate use a pencil.

Your projects can be uploaded and emailed to me at: amanda.knepper@k12.wv.us OR amanda@morganpartnership.org

Please check the links on PositiveValuesNetwork.com for other art therapy projects and Positive Action videos.

Monday- Project: FAMILY GAME OF PICK-UP STICKS

Materials: Your family members and sticks that you gather and decorate (or the game Pick up Sticks). You can go outside with your family and gather some small twigs. Make sure that the sides are smooth, and they are as straight as possible. You can be creative and paint them if you like to make your own set. Once they dry completely, you can play! You can also choose to paint Q-tips and allow them to dry as shown in the picture below.

To incorporate the word SHARING this week for Positive Actions, we are going to be playing some family games that involve taking turns.

With your family, you will sit around a table or on the floor, if you would like. You will gather all the sticks in one hand and gently let them fall in a pile. You will choose who goes first, and that person will attempt to remove a stick without moving any of the rest of the sticks in the pile. If they are successful, they get to keep that stick. Then, the next person will go. You will repeat this until the pile is gone. Whoever has the most sticks at the end wins the game. This is a game your family can play over and over, and you are sharing your time as a family and taking turns as well. This game will also teach the lesson of patience because it takes lots of patience to wait your turn and to give someone else the time they need to take their turn.

Tuesday- Project: FAMILY HOP-SCOTCH
Materials: Today you will need your family members, different colors of sidewalk chalk,

and a blacktop/concrete to create your game to play.

You and your family will decide what kind of pattern, picture, and colors you would like to use. You may choose to draw it beforehand in case you want to make any changes. There are many ways to create a Hop-Scotch game and there are a few pictures attached below for ideas.

Once your family decides the pattern you want to create, you can use your chalk and make your game board.

Finally, each member will take turns hoping on the game board.

Think about this “Why is it Important to Take Turns with Others?” “What Happens if you Don’t?” “How do You Grow as a Person, When You Take Turns?” Talk about this with your family.

Wednesday- Project: FAMILY FUN WITH CREATIVITY: “KER-PLUNK”

Materials: Today you will need your family members, marbles or pom-poms, Choice of a bottle, colander, paper towel holder or toilet paper roll. You will also need sticks/skewers or straws or something to stick through to hold the marbles or pom-poms back. (These ideas are shown in the pictures below).

This activity is re-creating the Game “Ker-Plunk.”

Each member of the family will take a turn pulling a stick out, trying not to let the pom- poms or marbles fall through the container. You will repeat this process, each taking a turn, until the marbles or pom-poms fall through the holes. Whoever ends up with the most sticks, before the fall, wins.

Thursday- Project: FAMILY BOARD GAME NIGHT

Materials: You will need one dice (die), and then you will choose to either use an attached game board template or to create one with your family. If you choose to create your own, you will need heavy paper, things to color and draw with and your family members for ideas. Once you choose or create your template, you will decide what type of game you want to play: you can be creative and add candy to certain spaces, or things to win, you can add things like “go back 2 spaces,” “move forward 3 spaces.” Etc. Be creative with this and have fun with it! Each member will take turns rolling a die and moving their piece forward in the game. The winner is determined by who lands on END/FINISH first.

Friday- Project: FUNKY FAMILY SPOON PUPPETS
Materials: Plastic or wooden spoons, permanent marker, glue (hot glue gun would work

best for this, ribbon, yarn string, felt or material to use for clothes, and scissors.

As a family you will sit together and create the members of your family using the above- mentioned materials. You can even include your family pets, neighbors, close friends, or whoever is important to you. Once you have completed making each member, you can use them as puppets. Your family can write a play and act it out. Use your imagination with this activity and have fun with it as there are no limits.

Thank you for your participation, Ms. Mandi Knepper, MSW-intern

Each member takes a turn making a line to connect two dots. Whoever draws the last line to close a box will enter their first initial into that box. When finished, you will count the number of boxes you made (initials) and whoever has the most boxes wins!

🎨"2021 Family Art Therapy Week 12" with Ms. Mandi, BSW🎨

2021- FAMILY ART-THERAPY WEEK 12

This weeks projects are going to be related to the Positive Action Word of the Week- RESPECT

RESPECT-

Your projects can be uploaded and emailed to me at: amanda.knepper@k12.wv.us OR amanda@morganpartnership.org

Please check the links on PositiveValuesNetwork.com for other art therapy projects and Positive Action videos.

Monday- Project: GROWING RESPECT WITHIN YOUR FAMILY

Today you will need: Option 1- (1) Large sheet of paper, paint and a black fine tip marker. Your family members must all be present to make this project successful as you will be using their handprints and ideas.

Option 2: (1) Large sheet of paper, construction paper of different colors, glue, scissors, markers, and your family members to brainstorm ideas.

You will talk with your family to figure out what you do within your family to establish rules of respect. How do you show your family members respect? What is acceptable, what is not? You can choose to make a list and then fill in your handprints or flowers with your ideas. Talk openly with your family members about how you appreciate them when they respect you and your feelings. Then discuss how you feel when you are not respected. How can you work together to build each other up and improve your skills?

On your flowers or handprints, you will write: How do you maintain RESPECT within your family and household?

Respect is treating others the way you want to be treated, being considerate

and honoring the feelings, opinions, and property of others. Self-respect is being good to

yourself and not putting yourself down, taking care of yourself. Self-discipline is

making responsible choices in what you say and do to reach my personal goals.

Tuesday- Project: Creating a Family “RESPECT” Motto and Image

You will be working together to come up with a catchy phrase, or motto to reflect how your family feels about respect within your home. This should also reflect how your family members treat others in your community. You will need paper, markers or crayons, and a pencil. You will collaborate with your family members to come up with a Motto. I am attaching a few ideas but want you to be creative in making one up on your own. It is especially important during times like this to respect each other and be open-minded. Once you have created your Motto, you will then create an image to go along. Please be creative!

Wednesday- Project: WHAT DOES YOUR RESPECT BUBBLE LOOK LIKE?

You and your family will be creating respect bubbles. You can make one for your whole family or each member can choose to make their own. In each bubble you will write one thing to describe how you like others to treat you when they are being respectful of your needs and desires. For example, you can write things like being kind with your words when you talk to me, help me by holding the door when you see me coming, help with my chores or homework, being supportive with my choices etc. Once you have filled in each bubble, you will then design your bubbles. You can draw pictures to show what you wrote or randomly color them; you can create patterns as well.

Thursday- Project: RESPECTING MOTHER EARTH

Today we will be creating posters of ways that your family respects Mother Earth. You can use whatever your family has on hand to create this project: poster board, cardboard, construction paper, crayons, markers, colored pencils, watercolors, pastels etc.

You can draw things such as recycling cans and plastic, picking up trash in your community and around your home, cleaning up local streams and rivers, planting trees, carpooling with friends and family to lessen pollution, turning off the water when you are not using it, fixing leaky pipes, using recycled items, or whatever your family may do to save the planet. There are no limitations. Then, you will talk with your family about why it is so crucial to respect the Earth.

What does Mother Earth do for you?

Friday- Project: BEING RESPECTFUL TO OTHERS IN YOUR COMMUNITY

Today I would like for your family to think of ways that you can help others in your community. If you happen to be out, you can open/hold the door for other people, you can return a cart for someone while at the store, carry books for a friend at school, help a neighbor to get their groceries in, check on the elderly, take out their trash or get their mail, bake a pie and take to someone in the neighborhood, or ask a friend how you can help.

You will create a TITLE for your drawing and then illustrate your family RESPECTING the Earth.

🎨"2021 Family Art Therapy Week 11: CARING and Self Care" with Ms. Mandi, BSW🎨

2021- FAMILY ART-THERAPY WEEK 11

This weeks projects are going to be related to the Positive Action Word of the Week- CARING

Your projects can be uploaded and emailed to me at: amanda.knepper@k12.wv.us OR amanda@morganpartnership.org

Please check the links on PositiveValuesNetwork.com for other art therapy projects and Positive Action videos.

Monday- Project: Self-Care

Today we are going to start out our week by practicing Self-Care techniques. Self-care activities are anything that involves you doing something you enjoy, for yourself. This can include taking a nature walk, exercising, baking if you enjoy that, cooking a new recipe, drawing/coloring, going to a salon to get your hair or nails done, going shopping for a new outfit, taking a few minutes for quiet time to refocus, hanging out with friends, meditation, yoga, listening to music, or watching a movie or show you really like. Self-care is important for a healthy mind and body. It helps to decrease your stress level and increase your overall wellbeing and happiness. Self-care is critical to achieve optimum health.

Today, your family will choose a few things to do together that are considered self-care strategies. Be sure to talk with your family and share things that you enjoy about your special time together. If your family chooses to go on a nature walk, you can also make it fun by creating a “treasure hunt” activity. Write down a few things that you think you will see on your walk and then check them off when you do. If you do not see all the items on your list, you can discuss why maybe they weren’t seen, or weren’t in the area when you took your walk.

Tuesday- Project: Exploring Texture by Coloring

Today your family is going to have fun with coloring. You can choose to use colored pencils, markers or crayons. You can even use watercolors if you would like to go that route. Self-care can be achieved through so many aspects of art. You will need your family members to do this project, because once you have completed your masterpiece, you will gift it to someone special. You can have an open discussion with your family members about self-care and why activities such as these are important for your mind, body and spirit. You can even choose to take a drive to a local nursing home and give some of the residents your pictures to display in their rooms. (Please call ahead to follow COVID rules if you decide you would like to do that).

Wednesday- Project: Painted Salt with Watercolors

Today we will be using paper, glue, salt, a small paintbrush and watercolors or food coloring. Each member of your family will need these items to create their project. You will create your design by outlining your picture with glue. Then you will cover your glue with salt and let dry for a bit. (please be sure to shake off the excess after it dries). You will then use a paintbrush, place it into the watercolor gently and drop small amounts of watercolor onto the salt design, which will change the color of the salt. You will repeat this process until you complete your project. Remember to lay this project on a flat surface for several hours to dry. Once dry your family members can display them in your home.

Thursday- Project: Family Snowman Making with Teamwork

Today you will be working collaboratively with your family members to make a snowman. You can use paper, paint, buttons, cotton balls, ribbon, pretzel sticks, paper plates, etc. Brainstorm with your family and talk about how you would like to make your family’s snowman. The idea is to work as a team to create this project. When you have your snowman completed, you can display him/her in your home.

Attached are a few examples of how you can make a snowman with art supplies.

Friday- Project: Snow Volcano

Your family will be using snow to make a volcano!!! This is so much fun and so neat to watch. You will need: baking soda, dish liquid, food coloring, vinegar, a spoon, snow and a container. Please be sure to include each family member. Attached are a few pictures to show how to do this activity. Have a good time with this. You can repeat it several times with different colors of food coloring.

🎨"2021 Family Art Therapy Week 8" with Ms. Mandi, BSW🎨

2021- FAMILY ART-THERAPY WEEK 8

This weeks projects are going to be related to the Positive Action Word of the Week-

Your CREATIONS can be uploaded and emailed to me at: Amanda.Knepper@k12.wv.us Please check the links on PositiveValuesNetwork.com for other art therapy projects and

Positive Action videos.

Monday- Project: Marshmallow & Spaghetti Tower

Today we will be creating a tower with marshmallows and spaghetti. You will need 10 regular sized marshmallows and 10 pieces of regular spaghetti. (If you use thin, it will be more CHALLENGING). You are welcome to try that if youd like. Your family’s CHALLENGE is to work together to make the tallest creation you can in 5 minutes. You are allowed to break the spaghetti and pull apart the marshmallows if needed but remember you only have the materials you listed so once you break or tear them, they can’t be fixed and you cant get new. Brainstorm with your family to come up with a workable plan ahead of time. It may also help to draw your design before you start to build to see if you want to make changes. Look at a clock and allow 5 minutes to build. You can do this several times and compare what worked and what didnt work. Through trial and error, you will learn that not everything always works out 100% with the first attempt. It may

take a few tries before you get something how you want it. KEEP TRYING!! Just remember to start with fresh materials each time and brainstorm beforehand. How did your family work together as a team to problem solve this project? Take pictures and upload them or send them to the email below. I am excited to see how CHALLENGING your ideas are.

(PLEASE SEND YOUR CREATIONS TO ME AT amanda@morganpartnership.org WHEN YOU HAVE COMPLETED THIS PROJECT and please feel free to comment what worked and what didn’t work for your family.) 😊

Tuesday- Project- Drawing Yourself & a Family Member

Today we are going to need white paper, a pencil to sketch, a ruler and a small mirror. You will sit with your family members around a table. Each person will choose someone’s face to sketch. Sketch the details of their face and hair. You can add color if you would like. Then, each person will sit with a mirror and sketch their own face.

HINT: Use the ruler to CREATE sections on your paper (like a tic-tac toe board over the outline of the face before you start to sketch). This makes the face easier to sketch because you tend to break the picture down into sections instead of one huge sketch.

Analyze your picture after: What expression did you choose to draw: happy, excited, sad, angry, scared? Was it more CHALLENGING to sketch your family member or yourself? Why do you think so? We typically see the flaws in ourselves more than in others. Keep in mind, we are all special and UNIQUE. Be KIND to yourself and sketch the positive you see.

Below is a face template for you to print if you would like an outline.

(PLEASE SEND YOUR CREATIONS TO ME amanda@morganpartnership.org WHEN YOU HAVE COMPLETED THIS PROJECT) 😊

Wednesday- Project: Inch-Worm Race

You will need paper, scissors, a straw, a flat surface and your family members. You will need all things listed for a successful race! Each person in your family will make an inch- worm by drawing the outline, cutting it out, and then folding it into even sections (like an accordion or paper fan). This will help the worm to move across the surface. You can decorate your inch-worm if you’d like. Then your will find a flat surface, line up your inch worms evenly, put the straw in your mouth and blow air over the inch-worm to make it move. Which worm got to the finish line first? Did the length of the worm matter? Did the added decoration cause a difference in weight and cause the worm to slow down or did it help to push the worm along? Challenge to see if the more force you use, moves the inch worm faster or does this create an issue by flattening the worm to the surface? What helps and what doesn’t? You can repeat this to see who wins the race and to see what works and what doesn’t work. What did you change the second time, about your inch-worm or your method, to problem solve the issues that weren’t working?

(PLEASE SEND YOUR CREATIONS TO amanda@morganpartnership.org WHEN YOU HAVE COMPLETED THIS PROJECT) 😊

Thursday- Project: Paper Heart Weave

We will be weaving a paper heart today. You will need different colored paper, a pencil, scissors, a ruler if you have one and your family members. Everyone should have materials and each person should create a heart. If you dont have a ruler, you can use the flat edge of a book. This will help to create even sections. There is a template to trace if you need one, or you can print this and use it. Using different color construction paper makes the heart weave stand out more.

You will fold a piece of paper in half, use your pencil and draw an arch to make a heart. Then you will use your scissors to cut along the line you drew. Open it up to make sure you made a heart (lay that aside for now). You will then cut thin strips of paper that are different colors (and put them to the side). You will take your heart that you cut out, fold it in half on the line where it was folded previously. You will use your ruler to draw lines across your heart from left to right or up and down. Using your scissors, very carefully, cut on the lines with leaving 1⁄2 inch at the end to not cut your heart apart. You will then open your heart, and weave the strips of paper through the sections you created by going over and under. The next row, you will rotate in the opposite direction to give the weave affect. There is a template attached for your use and a picture to show you what we are creating.

Was it CHALLENGING to weave the paper? Were you able to create your heart? What was the hardest about this project? Did you find it fun, easy?

When you have completed your heart, you can choose someone in your family to gift it to.

😊

(PLEASE SEND YOUR CREATIONS TO amanda@morganpartnership.org WHEN YOU HAVE COMPLETED THIS PROJECT) 😊

Friday- Project: CHALLENGE YOURSELF WITH COMB ART

Today you will need paper, paint, and old combs that you dont plan to use anymore. Sit around the table with your family and be as CREATIVE as you want! On the piece of paper, you will randomly place dots of paint, then rub your comb through the paint gently to create your image. There are no rules and no limits to this activity. Just use pain and a comb. You can do something random or create an object. There are pictures attached to show examples.

I am CURIOUS to see how you CHALLENGED yourself and what youre CREATION looks like??? Please Share!

(PLEASE SEND YOUR CREATIONS TO amanda@morganpartnership.org WHEN YOU HAVE COMPLETED THIS PROJECT) 😊 You can also use Amanda.knepper@k12.wv.us to email your projects.

Please Access PositiveValuesNetwork.com for more links, videos, and art projects.

I hope you have a great weekend!! Please share what you liked best and what you would like me to change for next time. If you have a fun idea, please let me know so that I can incorporate them into another fun activity for your family!

(BELOW are 2 Fun 30 Day Art Challenges for your Family). Thank you for your participation,
Ms. Mandi
