🎨"2021 Family Art Therapy Week 14" EMPATY/EMPATÍA with Ms. Mandi, BSW🎨
Is the ability to understand and share the feelings of
another person.
Your projects can be uploaded and emailed to me at: amanda.knepper@k12.wv.us OR amanda@morganpartnership.org
Please check the links on PositiveValuesNetwork.com for other art therapy projects and Positive Action videos.
Monday- Project: FAMILY EMPATHY X-RAY
Today your family will be making an X-ray of what your feelings look like on the inside when you do something negative to someone else then compare it to when you are empathetic and kind to that same person. How do you apologize when you have hurt someone’s feelings? How do you make things right with that person again?
Materials your family will need: Each member of your family will need a large piece of white paper, something to color/draw with and each other to brainstorm ideas.
Please hold a conversation with your family to discuss why it is so important to be EMPATHETIC to other people’s feelings. How does it make you feel when people do not treat you kindly? Then talk about how you feel when people are kind to you and how it makes you feel on the inside when you are kind to others.
Important Take Away Message: “Treat Others How You Wish to be Treated”
Tuesday- Project: FAMILY EMPATHY BRACELET
Today your family will be using pipe cleaners and a variety of beads to create an
EMPATHY bracelet.
Materials you will need: Pipe cleaners, beads of different colors and kids, paper and something to write with and your family to brainstorm with.
Arrange your beads by color, size, shape or however your family would like to separate them. Choose what each color represents to your family. Make a chart as shown below to describe what they mean and why they are important to your family to include on your bracelet. For example: why is it important to be “happy, brave, strong, kind, empathetic etc.?” You can make your list as long as you would like. Once you have created your list, add your beads to your bracelet, one at a time. You can choose to add a few or fill the entire pipe cleaner or to use a few, while leaving some of the pipe cleaner exposed. Lastly, when you have your bracelet completed, choose a special person to give it to. What was their reaction? Why do you think they had this reaction? Discuss how it made you feel to gift something you made to your special person and how their reaction made you feel.
Wednesday- Project: EMPATHY SHOES
Today with our families we are going to think about how we would feel to be in someone else’s shoes. How would you feel if you were that person? How would your day be? How would your schedule change? What grades would you have in school? Who would be your friends? Where would you live and how would you live?
Materials needed for this activity: Paper (or print the template attached), markers, crayons, colored pencils and something to write with.
Always show EMPATHY and kindness when interacting with someone. Some people are more fortunate than others and some are very unfortunate. These facts should never be a reason for treating someone differently than how you would want to be treated. Talk to your family about what you are grateful for.
Cut out the shoe template below (you can choose one or draw your own.) You are going to think about a person in your life and put yourself in their shoes. This means you will think about how your life would be, to be that person. You will write on your shoe “I can put myself in someone else’s shoe when _______” and fill in the blank. Each member of your family should do this. This activity should be eye-opening and help you to understand and appreciate what you have. Talk with your family about what you chose to write on your shoes. It should also make you more mindful, helpful and kind to others.
Thursday- Project: EMPATHETIC THOUGHTS and SELF ESTEEM BOOSTERS!!! Today we are going to be making a family poster that will boost each other’s self-esteem by
being empathetic.
Materials you will need: A large piece of white paper, some paint and markers or colored pencils.
Your family will brainstorm to come up with a positive title that will go in the center of your paper. Then your family members will each paint the palm of one hand and place it onto the paper making a handprint. (Note: Leave some space between each hand so comments can be added by other members of the family). Once you allow the handprint to dry, each member of your family will use colored pencils or markers to write positive words or phrases, that describe that person, next to each handprint.
Lastly, you will read the comments together. How did it make you feel to read and see the positive comments your family members wrote to you?
You can display your poster in your home as a reminder that you love and care for one another, even on hard and difficult days.
Friday- Project: UPLIFTING PAINTED ROCKS!
Today we will be painting rocks to place around your home and community. When
someone finds them with your uplifting messages, it will brighten their day!
Your family will take a nature walk to find small, smooth rocks, wash them and allow them to completely dry.
Once they are dry, you will need a clean surface, an old towel or something to lay the rocks on while you paint them, paints of different colors, and small paint brushes. Each member of your family should have a few rocks to decorate and access to the materials.
On each rock, you will think of an uplifting message and picture to paint.
When your rocks are completed and dry, your family can go together in your community and place them around for others to find.
SEND PROJECT PICTURES TO: amanda@morganpartnership.org 😊 OR Amanda.knepper@k12.wv.us

I hope you have a great weekend!! If you have a fun idea, please let me know so that I can incorporate them into another fun activity for your family!
Thank you for your participation, Ms. Mandi

"Sulwe" PBS Race & Diversity Book Series from Morgan County Partnership
(Book 3 of 13). The Morgan County Partnership's Positive Action program presents "Sulwe" by Lupita Nyong'o. "This Coretta Scott King award-winning picture book is about self-esteem and beauty within. It’s a whimsical and heartwarming story about a little girl who learns to embrace her unique self." “[My daughter] likes that [Sulwe] was brave when people were not nice to her.” -Alexandra, Parent of 4-year-old
"Sulwe has skin the color of midnight. She is darker than everyone in her family. She is darker than anyone in her school. Sulwe just wants to be beautiful and bright, like her mother and sister. Then a magical journey in the night sky opens her eyes and changes everything. In this stunning debut picture book, actress Lupita Nyong’o creates a whimsical and heartwarming story to inspire children to see their own unique beauty."
See a beautiful story unfold before your eyes then join Mrs. Hott for "Let's Talk About It" discussion questions suitable for all ages, at home and in the classroom too. MoTo Monday, Week 34, EMPATHY, Summer STEAM Day
POSITIVE ACTIONS!
The Morgan County Partnership is soooo pleased to provide our greater community with continued online Positive Actions programming with our regularly scheduled
"Daily PAWsitive Actions Community Vlogcast"
for families to share Positive Actions together!
Our Social and Emotional Wellness will be supported as we, especially now, continue each day with positive
THOUGHTS, ACTIONS, and FEELINGS!
SO, LET'S GET STARTED!!!!
EMPATHY!
By now, maybe you are also overwhelmed with all the scary news out there and it may seem hard to find Some Good News
and really feel empathy as we are all staying at home. This week, let's try to understand that there are many in our community on the front lines from hospitals to grocery stores, and if we put ourself in their shoes during the pandemic, imagine how scared they are just doing their jobs every day. Showing empathy for others is a Positive Action! So remember this: When you wash your hands often....that's empathy too! And, "staying home" is also hard, we know; but, it is a Positive Action that helps us show empathy for others so we all can be healthy! Social Distancing can, and will, stop the virus.
Mrs. Hott and Mrs. Sheima are SUPER excited to share Positive Actions with Morgan County students because today, and each Monday, is when we "motor-up" YOUR school week and get ready for more PAWsome days of learning and growing...
Today is April 27, 2020!
Get ready to be inspired with a special guest from the Morgan County Partnership, Summer Goller hosting
"Summer STEAM......watch this!
Our PAWsitive Action "word of the week" is: empathy
And in Spanish: empatia
Try to say "empatia"!
(TRY THIS in Spanish, click here: empatia, then click the speaker! Watch here: Say Empatia!)
For Positive Actions, we are learning about wonderful words that build our Social and Emotional Wellness to help us all get along (at home, school, and in the community), raise our student assets, build confidence, and improve our academics!
For week's programming schedule, we will learn more about POSITIVE character values that help us all to follow the GOLDEN RULE! On the vlogcast this week, we will see some new friends;
MoTo Mon.**Summer STEAM for a pawsome chalk activity;
Talkin' Tue.**Brain Talk with Becca and Mandi;
Value Vlog Ved.**PAWsome Parents with Ms. Nikki, our
Assets Thurs. **MC After 3 Kid Counselors STOP,
