🎨"2021 Family Art Therapy Week 21"COMMUNITY/COMMUNIDAD, with Ms. Mandi, BSW🎨

2021- FAMILY ART-THERAPY WEEK 21

This weeks projects are going to be related to the Positive Action Word of the Week-

A group of people living in the same place or

having a particular characteristic in common.

Your projects can be uploaded and emailed to me at: amanda.knepper@k12.wv.us OR amanda@morganpartnership.org

Please check the links on PositiveValuesNetwork.com for other art therapy projects and Positive Action videos.

Monday- Project: What Type of Community Do You Live In?

Materials: Your family will sit together and think about what your community looks like. You will need a large piece of white paper, markers, crayons, colored pencils, a pencil with an eraser and a ruler.

What are the buildings in your community that mean the most to you? What kind of a community do you live in: rural, urban, suburban? What do you like about your community? What would you change if you could?

Communities are unique in their own way, just like people. No two communities are the same: the people, stores, schools, churches, parks, courthouses and landscape is all different. Some are more diverse than others. Some are in rural areas, whereas others are in suburban and urban areas.

You and your family will draw and color the community where you live. Make sure to add the buildings that are most important to your family. There are a few pictures attached to explain the different types of communities.

Tuesday- Project: Building Your Community One Box At A Time

Materials: boxes of different sizes, construction paper, paper towel holders, toilet paper tubes, scissors, glue, markers, crayons (you can add whatever you would like to build your community). You need your family to brainstorm which buildings you want to include in your display. You can include landscaping, monuments, animals, flags, trucks and cars etc.

(This lesson builds from Monday you can use your drawing as your template for building your community).

Think about the type of community you live in and what is important to mention or add to your model. Does your community have a local park with a pool? Does your community have a shopping center? Barber shop? Store with window front shopping? Garages or car dealers? Schools and how many? Courthouses? Talk with your family about the importance of these stores and buildings. What would you like to add to your community if you could? How far does your family have to travel to shop at your favorite stores?

Once you have brainstormed, you can start to create your project with your family. Start with your base or large piece of construction paper. You can also use a cardboard box and flatten it out to make a sturdy platform. Then cover it with roads, grass, or the choice of your foundation, then start adding your buildings and landscaping. Make sure to label your buildings.

When you are finished creating your community you can display it in your home to remind your family where you live and what is important to you. Your schools will enjoy seeing your displays and the local library may be willing to put your model on display there as well.

Wednesday- Project: Who Are The Heroes In Your Community?

Materials: White paper, crayons, colored pencils, a pencil with an eraser, and your family to brainstorm the people of your community that you consider to be heroes. You can make a list of these people and then work together with your family to create your picture.

You will each take part in creating the list and drawing/coloring the community members you named. Think of the people you encounter daily: teachers, store workers, doctors, military, dentists, bus drivers, police, mail carriers, firemen, bank tellers, pharmacists, gas attendants, trashmen, restaurant workers etc. You can add as many heroes as you would like to your creation.

Every person in your community plays a vital role in making your community run smoothly. Each worker does something different to provide a support or service to others in the community. Think about what would happen if certain people did not perform the job duties that they do. How would this change your community?

Once you have completed your picture, you can ask your local businesses if they would like to display your artwork. For example: The Ice-House in Berkeley Springs or the Library.

Thursday- Project: What Part Of The Beehive Community Are You Most Like?

Materials: You will need the information below, the attached Beehive template and your family to discuss your positive traits, a pencil, eraser, crayons, colored pencils or something to color with. (You can choose whatever you prefer).

Once you have read over the below information, each family member should choose which Beehive member you are most like. (Given gender is not a factor because as mentioned most bees are females). What makes you most like the bee you chose? What jobs or tasks do you perform within your family or community that represent the bee you chose? Once you choose the type of bee you are most like, you will decorate your beehive (template) or you can draw one on your own. Using the Beehive Template, you will choose to either write a poem, story or list the jobs that you perform within your home/community that make you most like the bee of you choose.

There are 3 different types of Beehive Community workers: The Queen, the Drones and the Workers.

The Queen

Worker Bees

is the only fertile female in the colony. It is the only member that can lay

fertilized eggs. She signals to the rest of the bee colony that all is well in the hive with the

other bees.

The Drone or Male Honeybee have only one task: fertilization. Drones have neither

stingers to help defend the hive nor the necessary body structure for collecting pollen or

nectar to contribute and feed the community.

females.

Worker bees constitute the largest population in the colony and are all

Worker bees have many different jobs: Cleaners- clean and polish the empty cells,

Undertakers- remove dead bees from the hive, Nurses- care for the developing bees,

Builders- produce wax to build hives, Temperature Controllers- control the humidity and

temperature of the hive, Guards- guards the hive and watches for cracks in the hive, and

Foragers- search of nectar, water, pollen and propolis. They can make about ten trips a

day, each one lasting about an hour and return to their hive at sunset. At this final phase of

life, at the age of 6 8 weeks, most worker bees will die in the field.

Friday- Project: Community Rock Art

Materials: Small- smooth, clean rocks, Paintbrushes, paints of different colors, paper towels and water to wash your brushes. You will need to work with your family to come up with positive words to paint onto your rocks. There are several examples listed below but please feel free to come up with something else. Once you and your family have painted your rocks, place them around your community for others to find. This will brighten their day and put a smile on their face to see your beautiful artwork and display in the community.

Think about how you feel when you read positive words or when you come across something beautiful that is unexpected.

Have you ever found one of these painted rocks? How did it make you feel? Did you decide to keep it or re-hide it for someone else to find? Why is spreading joy and positivity within your community important? Please discuss these questions with your family and hold a conversation about the importance of kindness and positivity. Think about the reverse. What would your community look like if people were negative all the time? How would this change the atmosphere of your community?

🎨"2021 Family Art Therapy Week 17" SHARING/COMPARTIR with Ms. Mandi, BSW🎨

2021- FAMILY ART-THERAPY WEEK 17

This weeks projects are going to be related to the Positive Action Word of the Week- SHARING

A sharing person is generous and willing to share. If you are sharing, you are

glad to give things to others. To share something is to use it or enjoy it with

others, like when people share a cake at a birthday party, or you let a

classmate use a pencil.

Your projects can be uploaded and emailed to me at: amanda.knepper@k12.wv.us OR amanda@morganpartnership.org

Please check the links on PositiveValuesNetwork.com for other art therapy projects and Positive Action videos.

Monday- Project: FAMILY GAME OF PICK-UP STICKS

Materials: Your family members and sticks that you gather and decorate (or the game Pick up Sticks). You can go outside with your family and gather some small twigs. Make sure that the sides are smooth, and they are as straight as possible. You can be creative and paint them if you like to make your own set. Once they dry completely, you can play! You can also choose to paint Q-tips and allow them to dry as shown in the picture below.

To incorporate the word SHARING this week for Positive Actions, we are going to be playing some family games that involve taking turns.

With your family, you will sit around a table or on the floor, if you would like. You will gather all the sticks in one hand and gently let them fall in a pile. You will choose who goes first, and that person will attempt to remove a stick without moving any of the rest of the sticks in the pile. If they are successful, they get to keep that stick. Then, the next person will go. You will repeat this until the pile is gone. Whoever has the most sticks at the end wins the game. This is a game your family can play over and over, and you are sharing your time as a family and taking turns as well. This game will also teach the lesson of patience because it takes lots of patience to wait your turn and to give someone else the time they need to take their turn.

Tuesday- Project: FAMILY HOP-SCOTCH
Materials: Today you will need your family members, different colors of sidewalk chalk,

and a blacktop/concrete to create your game to play.

You and your family will decide what kind of pattern, picture, and colors you would like to use. You may choose to draw it beforehand in case you want to make any changes. There are many ways to create a Hop-Scotch game and there are a few pictures attached below for ideas.

Once your family decides the pattern you want to create, you can use your chalk and make your game board.

Finally, each member will take turns hoping on the game board.

Think about this “Why is it Important to Take Turns with Others?” “What Happens if you Don’t?” “How do You Grow as a Person, When You Take Turns?” Talk about this with your family.

Wednesday- Project: FAMILY FUN WITH CREATIVITY: “KER-PLUNK”

Materials: Today you will need your family members, marbles or pom-poms, Choice of a bottle, colander, paper towel holder or toilet paper roll. You will also need sticks/skewers or straws or something to stick through to hold the marbles or pom-poms back. (These ideas are shown in the pictures below).

This activity is re-creating the Game “Ker-Plunk.”

Each member of the family will take a turn pulling a stick out, trying not to let the pom- poms or marbles fall through the container. You will repeat this process, each taking a turn, until the marbles or pom-poms fall through the holes. Whoever ends up with the most sticks, before the fall, wins.

Thursday- Project: FAMILY BOARD GAME NIGHT

Materials: You will need one dice (die), and then you will choose to either use an attached game board template or to create one with your family. If you choose to create your own, you will need heavy paper, things to color and draw with and your family members for ideas. Once you choose or create your template, you will decide what type of game you want to play: you can be creative and add candy to certain spaces, or things to win, you can add things like “go back 2 spaces,” “move forward 3 spaces.” Etc. Be creative with this and have fun with it! Each member will take turns rolling a die and moving their piece forward in the game. The winner is determined by who lands on END/FINISH first.

Friday- Project: FUNKY FAMILY SPOON PUPPETS
Materials: Plastic or wooden spoons, permanent marker, glue (hot glue gun would work

best for this, ribbon, yarn string, felt or material to use for clothes, and scissors.

As a family you will sit together and create the members of your family using the above- mentioned materials. You can even include your family pets, neighbors, close friends, or whoever is important to you. Once you have completed making each member, you can use them as puppets. Your family can write a play and act it out. Use your imagination with this activity and have fun with it as there are no limits.

SEND PROJECT PICTURES TO: amanda@morganpartnership.org 😊 OR Amanda.knepper@k12.wv.us

Please Access PositiveValuesNetwork.com for more links, videos, and art projects.

I hope you have a great weekend!! If you have a fun idea, please let me know so that I can incorporate them into another fun activity for your family!

Thank you for your participation, Ms. Mandi Knepper, MSW-intern

Each member takes a turn making a line to connect two dots. Whoever draws the last line to close a box will enter their first initial into that box. When finished, you will count the number of boxes you made (initials) and whoever has the most boxes wins!

🎨"2021 Family Art Therapy Week 3" with Ms. Mandi, BSW🎨

“2021- FAMILY ART-THERAPY WEEK 3”

A little history about Art Therapy: Art Therapy was discovered by a British Artist, Adrian Hill in 1942, while she was recovering from tuberculosis.

Art, either creating it or viewing others’ art is used to help people explore their emotions, develop a strong self-awareness, cope with stress, boost self-esteem, and work on social skills.

As the New Year 2021 takes off let’s try to THINK of how far we have come, the SUCCESSES we have made, and the DREAMS that have come true. We will look back and THINK about what we are THANKFUL for. These activities are to help us regroup as a family and work together while having fun with art. If you are in need of materials, please reach out to Ms. Mandi and she will ensure that you have what you need for the activities. I have included pictures of examples to give a clear idea of each project so you have a better understanding in case my directions aren’t very clear, but please feel free to be as CREATIVE as you’d like, as this is your family’s artwork. Let your IMAGINIATION run wild!!

Monday- Today we will need white paper, something to draw with (crayons, markers, colored pencils), yarn of any color, glue and scissors. Each member of your family with CREATE their own project for later discussion. First, we will draw the head as shown in the picture below. You can choose how detailed you would like to be with your drawing. Then, you are going to think of 5 things that are causing you stress or anxiety. You will list those on small strips of paper and paste them onto the head you drew (shown below). Then cut pieces of yarn and glue the end to the head. Once the glue is dry take the pieces of loose yarn and cover the head, covering the stressful words you wrote.

Sit down with your family and openly discuss the things that are bothering you, don’t keep them inside. This is a difficult time and it is very important to be supportive of each other and talk. This will help to build coping skills and lessen anxiety for you.

(PLEASE SEND YOUR CREATIONS TO ME AT amanda@morganpartnership.org WHEN YOU HAVE COMPLETED THIS PROJECT and please feel free to comment what worked and what didn’t work for your family.) 😊"#$%

Tuesday- Today we will be creating a Tree of Strength with our families. You will need a piece of paper, something to draw/color with. Choose one person in the family to trace their hand. Someone else can trace the hand, while leaving the tops of the finger areas open to add branches (there is a picture below to give a visual). Next, someone will draw leaves on your family’s tree. Together you will brainstorm and make a list of the positive things/strengths you have as a family. This can be things such as: food, house, love, parent’s job, vehicle, the support of each other, communication, etc. You will write these words inside of your leaves.

You can hang this in your home somewhere so when things get tough you can look back and see everything you have to be grateful for. This will also give you resources to help you cope with the stressful times.

(PLEASE SEND YOUR CREATIONS TO ME amanda@morganpartnership.org WHEN YOU HAVE COMPLETED THIS PROJECT) 😊"#$%

Wednesday- Today you will need a sheet of white paper and thing to write/color with. We will be creating an Island for your Family. This will require you and your family to sit together and make a list of things that are important to your family. Things that if you were going to be alone on an island, you would want to take or make sure you were going to have there. For instance, you can list: them members of your family, your animals, your home, food, medicines, vehicle, books, etc. Once you have created your list, you can create your island. Draw a big island/circle, taking up the bottom half section of your page. Then you and your family can draw the items that you listed. Talk with your family about why these items are special to you and why you want to include them.

(PLEASE SEND YOUR CREATIONS TO amanda@morganpartnership.org WHEN YOU HAVE COMPLETED THIS PROJECT) 😊"#$%

Thursday-

Today we will need paper, things to draw and color with, and if possible something to do research with. You and your family will research your Family Coat of Arms or Family Crest as some families call them. You will do this by using your last name. If you do not have a way to research, feel free to create your crest with your family based on your personal interests. Below are ideas and templates to help you with this project. Use your imagination and be as creative as you wish! Have fun with this!

(PLEASE SEND YOUR CREATIONS TO amanda@morganpartnership.org WHEN YOU HAVE COMPLETED THIS PROJECT) #😊%$"

Friday-

It has been a full week of fun activities so we are going to close by doing some fun Yoga Art activities. Below is a template to show how to do Yoga. Please keep in mind that you can also go to Ms. Lacee’s Yoga link on PositiveValuesNetwork.com to see her videos. You can practice these yoga techniques with your family and take pictures to upload. Remember yoga and breathing regulation skills helps to regulate your heart-rate, blood pressure, oxygen level, warms up your muscles, builds strength, boost metabolism, increases flexibility, and increases self-esteem.

"2021 Family Art Therapy Week 1" with Ms Mandi, BSW

“2021- FAMILY ART-THERAPY WEEK 1”

A little history about Art Therapy: Art Therapy was discovered by a British Artist, Adrian Hill in 1942, while she was recovering from tuberculosis.

We are resilient creatures and should always keep that in mind. With COVID as a current worldwide pandemic we should practice SAFETY and RESPONSIBILITY by wearing masks and washing hands often. This will help us to protect our family and friends.

Think about ways you/your family can create new and fun ways to express yourselves. BE UNIQUE!!

As 2020 comes to a close and we enter 2021 let’s try to THINK of how far we have come, the SUCCESSES we have made, and the DREAMS that have come true. We will make New Year’s resolutions and THINK about what we are THANKFUL for. These activities are to help us regroup as a family and work together while having fun. The materials needed to create these activities most households will have but if you do not and would like to participate, please reach out to Ms. Mandi and she will ensure that you have what you need in time for the activities. I have included pictures of examples to give a clear idea of each project so you have a better understanding in case my directions aren’t very clear, but please feel free to be as CREATIVE as you’d like, as this is your family’s artwork. Let your IMAGINIATION run wild!!

Monday- Today we are going to use a box or plastic container with a lid to make a time capsule. You will need things to decorate this box: markers, stickers, colored paper, glue, glitter, crayons- anything your family would like to use. There are no limitations. Once you have your box decorated sit it to the side. Brainstorm with your family and choose a few mementoes, things that are VALUABLE to you or they can be your TREASURES: special pictures that you have copies of, letters, drawings, little stones that are special, coins, sea- shells, anything your family wants to add. Remember to be RESPECTFUL of your family members and their special items they’ve chosen. Lastly, complete the time capsule worksheet and put that inside the box. Each member of the family can complete one as your goals will all be different. On New Years of 2022 you can open the box and read your letters. See how much you’ve changed as a family and as a person. What goals have you accomplished? What CHALLENGES have you conquered? Did you treat others with KINDNESS??

Each time capsule will be UNIQUE to your family and SPECIALLY MADE BY YOU!!

(Attached is the Time Capsule Worksheet- Note: if you can’t print the sheet, feel free to use notebook paper with the questions or you can create questions with your family as well.)

(PLEASE SEND YOUR CREATIONS TO ME AT amanda@morganpartnership.org WHEN YOU HAVE COMPLETED THIS PROJECT and please feel free to comment what worked and what didn’t work for your family.) 😊"#$%

Tuesday- Today we are going to use water color and music to create a painting. If you do not have watercolors you can open an old marker and put it in water, let it sit for a while and it will dye the water, or you can use food coloring to dye the water. If you do not have a small paint brush you can use a Q-tip or a straw.

Have your family choose a song or a few songs to play while you are creating this project. You can repeat this with different music to see if your painting styles change with the difference in music.

Use your IMAGINATION while being CREATIVE: you can cut out a shape, animal, something you like/random, a letter or number etc. Lay that shape on the paper (as shown below) and then decorate around that shape. You can draw a shape or trace your hand. Place spots of watercolor around your image or on your paper and use your breath to blow the watercolor to create your image.

Each creation will be UNIQUE so please do not try to copy a picture you see. Let your TALENT show through in your individual artwork.

(PLEASE SEND YOUR CREATIONS TO ME amanda@morganpartnership.org WHEN YOU HAVE COMPLETED THIS PROJECT) 😊"#$%

Wednesday- We will be using colored paper, or white paper, crayons, markers, glue, glitter, and scissors. It’s okay if you don’t have all of the supplies: paper and scissors are most important.

We will be creating paper snowflakes today!!! They are perfect for the Winter season. Attached is a picture to show how to fold your paper and where to cut to create your snowflakes. You can make several and choose to decorate as you wish. Be CREATIVE and use your IMAGINATION!

How much snow are you wishing for this year?? Do you like to build snowmen? Do you go sledding and have snowball fights?

(PLEASE SEND YOUR CREATIONS TO amanda@morganpartnership.org WHEN YOU HAVE COMPLETED THIS PROJECT) 😊"#$%

Thursday- Today (with your parent’s permission) we will be creating a picture collage. Using pictures from 2020 and team-work from your family cut out pictures and create a collage.

You will need a sheet of heavy paper or piece of cardboard, scissors, glue and pictures (make sure you have copies.) You can also add important words to your collage as well.

(PLEASE SEND YOUR CREATIONS TO amanda@morganpartnership.org WHEN YOU HAVE COMPLETED THIS PROJECT) 😊"#$%

Friday- Today we will be making word art while using your name and Positive Action words: The words will connect and link together like a crossword puzzle. You can choose to use your last name too. Be CREATIVE!

Some of the Positive Actions words are: Positive, Safety, Responsible, Honesty, Unique, Valuable, Happiness, Success, Treasure, Dreams, Sportsmanship, Talent, Thankful, Exercise, Wellness, Intellectual, Creativity, Kindness, Caring, Respect, Nice and the Golden Rule
