🎨"2021 Family Art Therapy Week 2"🎨

A little history about Art Therapy: Art Therapy was discovered by a British Artist, Adrian Hill in 1942, while she was recovering from tuberculosis.

As 2020 comes to a close and we enter 2021 let’s try to THINK of how far we have come, the SUCCESSES we have made, and the DREAMS that have come true. We will make New Year’s resolutions and THINK about what we are THANKFUL for. These activities are to help us regroup as a family and work together while having fun. The materials needed to create these activities most households will have but if you do not and would like to participate, please reach out to Ms. Mandi and she will ensure that you have what you need in time for the activities. I have included pictures of examples to give a clear idea of each project so you have a better understanding in case my directions aren’t very clear, but please feel free to be as CREATIVE as you’d like, as this is your family’s artwork. Let your IMAGINIATION run wild!!

Monday- Today we will be creating a LOVE quilt with our families. You will need paper, construction paper, markers, crayons, or whatever your family chooses to use to create your quilt. Brainstorm together to come up with a list of things you LOVE. Have one person in your family draw the heart in the center of your page, someone else can create the sections and someone else can label them. Together you can decorate your sections. Finally, when your quilt is completed, you can look at it together to see what is most important to each of you and what makes your family special. (below are some ideas.)

Tuesday- Today we are going to make a rainbow of emotions by choosing colors that express the emotions of your year 2020. I would like for you to choose at least 5 colors and then label them with an emotion of your choice. THINK about the POSITIVE experiences your family has had, the GIFTS you’ve been given, the CHALLENGES you’ve had, and the DECISIONS your family has made throughout the year. How did this make you feel? How did you feel about virtual school? You can include all of those feelings in your rainbow. Each person in your family will need materials to create a rainbow. You will need paper of different colors, or you can color your paper with markers or crayons. You will need glue, and scissors or you can carefully tear your paper as shown below.

Wednesday- Today we will be creating Worry Monsters. Each member of your family will need paper and something to color with. You will create your Monster, name him/her and then label it with words that you worry about: for example- grades, chores, what others think of you, the weather, your family and friends, the virus, etc. Your monster can have several labels. Once you are finished with your creation, tear it up. Make a pile with all of your family members Worry Monsters. Then you can talk with your family about the things you wrote, the things that you worry and stress about. You can either burn the papers, or throw them away. (if you do burn them, let an adult do that.) Finally, write down as a family how you feel after the activity. Do you feel the same, different, better, worse?

Thursday- Today we are creating positivity buckets. Each family member will create a bucket by following the directions that are listed below. Then each person will need to make 15-20 raindrops. Each raindrop will be labeled with something positive you will do for your family or a member of your family: Give someone a hug, take out the trash, wash the dishes, playing with a sibling, help with house chores, feed the animals, fold clothes, etc. The goal is to over-flow your bucket with love for your family. Each raindrop that you choose and complete then goes into your bucket. Each day, every member of the family will choose a raindrop from one other members bucket. The member that created the bucket will do that chore/task. Be CREATIVE with your buckets and make them fit your family.

Friday- Today we are making Hands of Future Goals. Each member of the family will need paper, a pencil, markers, crayons, and to brainstorm a list of goals for their future. Trace your hand (one hand) onto the paper. Then, choose a way to decorate your hand while using goals for your future, as pictured below. You can be CREATIVE as your goals are UNIQUE to you!! Discuss your drawings with the members of your family.

I hope you have enjoyed all of the fun this week!! Please share what you liked best and what you would like me to change for next time. If you have a fun idea, please let me know so that I can incorporate them into another fun activity for your family!

Thank you for your participation, Ms. Mandi
