Talkin' Tuesday - 10/31/17

...where ALL students are UNIQUE and Wonderfully Made!
Time for POSITIVE ACTIONS!

Today is TEACHER TALKIN TUESDAY where we see that our school family of teachers, staff, and administrators care
about the students at
Warm Springs Intermediate School!

And, where we will take a Positive moment each week to
"Talk It Out"
and discuss important student issues.

I am so excited to be back for Positive Actions today, October 31st!! For each "Teacher Talkin' Tuesday" in Positive Actions, we will meet a new member of our school family community that cares about YOU!

As we listen to our school family share their dreams, how hard they worked/studied, when they were little, stories of their life, and how Positive Actions helped them, we learn a little more about each other.  Discovering about each other's life helps us to understand why and how we become who we are.

Here is today's video vlog from Mrs. Hott where we will get to meet Ms. Butts, 4th grade classroom teacher from our Warm Springs Intermediate family:

YOUR student assets are what will help you succeed here at school and as you grow up.  When we learn more about our teachers and staff, it helps to create a caring school climate, which is an essential external developmental asset.

So, guess what that means?!  Your teachers also want to learn more about YOU too!  For Positive Actions each Tuesday, you will have the opportunity to share something new about yourself with your teacher and classmates.  It is "Talk It Out Time!"  Each week, we will share one brand spanking new thing about our self.

Here is what Mrs. Hott wants you to do each week.  I will give you a completely different topic, and you will share with your teacher and friends something brand new or unknown about yourself!  Just watch the discoveries...we may find that someone in our class we don't know very well may have something in common with us!  Or, we may be completely and crazily different.  And, guess what?!...That is OK!  It is a Positive Action to learn about our community's likes and respect each other's differences.

So, for today's "Talk It Out," are you ready?  Here is our discovery question:

"What is your favorite book?"

Wait, that's not so hard, right?  But once you have decided what your favorite book is, I want you to also include WHY it is your favorite.

I'll go first.  Hi!  My name is Mrs. Hott.  My favorite book is Wonder by R.J. Palacio.  I LOVE this book, because it is about a boy who always finds the positive in his, well,... not so positive situation.  Have you read it?  It looks like this:

Image result for image of the book Wonder

Does that look familiar?  If not, maybe you have heard about the recent movie with Julia Roberts.  She plays the mom in the story, and when I saw the trailer at the movies, well, let's just say Mrs. Hott needed some tissues.  Take a look:

"You can't blend in when you were born to stand out."
I love that!  Each of you at WSIS are born to stand out too...you are WONDERfully made!

Pretty awesome, right?  Now, it's YOUR turn!  When you are ready to share, raise your hand then tell us YOUR favorite book and why!

That was awesome too!  You ALL just did a positive action by sharing something about yourself.  It is positive because it helps us to better understand each other.

To close, we will finish Talkin Tuesdays with a chance for you to share something important with your teacher.  Is there something you feel like "if my teacher only knew...." it would help her/him understand you better?  What is new this week you can tell your teacher?  For example, if my teacher knew how hard I tried or I really did do my best on our spelling words, you may feel more positive!  Or, if my teacher only knew why I was late again, maybe she/he can help me, etc.

In your Positive Action folder, you will find a Talk It Out Tuesday page.  Here, write one thing down you wish your teacher knew about your week.  Sometimes it helps to get our thoughts together when we write it down.  And, if you need to talk later, just ask your teacher, parent, friend, Mr. Elias, or Mrs. Hott by saying "May I please share a "talk it out" with you?"

Remember, sometimes our negative thoughts can turn positive just by telling or sharing with another person!  It is a Positive Action to "peacefully resolve our conflicts" too with others at home, school, and our community.  "Talking it out" starts with one student at a time...and that is.....

YOU!

Makin' Music Mondays - Oct. 30, 2017

...where ALL students are UNIQUE and Wonderfully Made!

Welcome to Positive Actions Community Character Vlogs!  Today is October 30th!!! Mrs. Hott is SUPER excited to share Positive Actions with Morgan County students because today, and each Monday, is "Makin' Music Mondays!" where we celebrate in song our "PAW"some school!

Do YOU know that "the way we think about ourselves controls how happy, healthy, and successful we will be"?  In Positive Actions this year, we will discover that we each have beautiful, unique characteristics and DREAMS that are all important and valuable to our Cougar Community, here, at school, and at home.

In our Positive Actions classroom time in the Cougar Den for this week, we will discover how our FAMILY helps to define our self concept.  We will engage in an exercise to share what we believe our families contribute to our self image, both positive and negative.

On our vlogcasts, since this time of year some students are wrapping up a sports season (like soccer, cheer, football...) and entering in to new challenges (like maybe Biddy Buddy Basketball), we will look at SPORTSMANSHIP.   Did YOU know that our classrooms are much like a team?  Just by coming to school, you are part of a learning team, or as Mrs. Hott loves to suggest... a "FAMILY" at school where our goals are to work hard and try to do our best!

Today's vlogcast, is our musical sing-along with a group called the Tri-State Ukulectics.  Our teachers are invited to strum-along with the new instruments and jam with the words to Mr. Cable's Cougar Creed....

...and please, sing louder than Mrs. Hott.

MR. CABLE'S COUGAR CREED

(chorus)
I can be kind
And caring too
For others and for me
It’s the right thing to do
I know that my home, school, and community
Have people who care about me

I know I am unique
There’s only one like me
Filled with valuable qualities
I’m made wonderfully
(chorus)

When I get up for school
I think of that Golden Rule
Treating others just and fair
Will show students I care

Be nice, be kind, be strong
We all want to get along
To make today the best
To all, I show respect
(chorus)

Positive Actions, I will choose
Helping others and my school
Get us all to reach our goals
With safe, responsible roles

We are all Cougars that Care
At school, at home, and play
Students can change the world
Beginning with today
(chorus)

Yay!  You ALL sound "PAW"some!!!  Great job!  Thanks for joining in and singing "Mr. Cable's Cougar Creed"! Was that fun?  If time, try to sing again...just fast forward pass the intro and sing-along.

Community Cougars...that CARE!!! Oct. 27, 2017

...where ALL students are UNIQUE and Wonderfully Made!

Time for POSITIVE ACTIONS!
Today is FUN FRIDAY where we see that our community cares about the students at
Warm Springs Intermediate School

I am so excited to be back for Positive Actions today, October 27th!! Each Fun Friday in Positive Actions, we will meet a new friend in our community that cares about YOU!  Meet Ms. Terri Bliziotes.  She is anther very busy community member of Morgan County.  Not only does she help people by being a nurse, Ms. Bliziotes recently was the Director of the Morgan County Expo in July.

Here is today's video vlog from Mrs. Hott:

Some days are hard; but with Positive Thoughts, Actions, and Feelings, YOU can make choices to help you and others have a Positive future!

Here are a few questions for you:
1)  Think about someone in your family.  Tell your teacher one Positive Action that person did recently.
2)  Now, think about someone here in our school community.  What is one Positive Action you saw that you liked?  Next, be sure to tell that person "thanks!" for being Positive!
3)  And, think about someone from your neighborhood or community.  What Positive Action did you see that person do?
(Share answers with each other.)

Remember, it is a Positive Action to follow the Golden Rule because changing the world starts with one student at a time...and that is.....

YOU!

Listening - Raising the Roof

on student assets!

Where ALL students are UNIQUE and WONDERFULLY MADE!

Today is Raising Student Assets Thursday!

I am so excited to be back for Positive Actions today, October 26th! As we continue our Cougar Crawl around Warm Springs Intermediate School, today we will take a look at raising student assets and a super important positive action word:

LISTENING

Tell your teacher what you think the word "LISTENING" means.
* "to give attention to"
* "attend closely for the purpose of hearing"
* "to wait attentively for a sound"

To listen.  Listening.  Watch today's video...

At home, families can sometimes be too pre-occupied with stuff to do that they just do not slow down to LISTEN to each other.  When we do other activities than staring at cell phones, watching tv, or playing video games, we can have positive high-quality relationships with family members

Now, let's talk!  First, tell your teacher what happened in this video. Then, answer these questions:
1)  Who had a positive thought?

2)  Who did a positive action?

3)  Who has positive feelings at the end of this video?

4)  Why?

Cougars that are good LISTENERS can change the world!

...where ALL students are UNIQUE and Wonderfully Made!

Today is VALUE VIDEO "V"EDNESDAY!

I am so excited to be back for Positive Actions today, Oct. 25th!  On Wednesdays, we will be examining Value Video Vednesdays when we will take a look at positive values to help us grow into a caring cougar community of students at Warm Springs Intermediate School.

Watch today's VALUE VIDEO VEDNESDAY, and talk about who illustrates Living your Dreams :

Let's talk about it.  Were you surprised?  Why?

Discuss who showed a Positive Thought?

Who shows a Positive Action?

What is the Positive Feeling you have when you see this video?

Now, think of a person who you know that has made an effort to Live their Dreams. What did he/she do?

Today, Mrs. Hott wants you to do a Positive Action too!  Try it!

I'll go first.  Hi!  My name is Mrs. Hott.  My favorite breakfast food is Eggs Benedict.  I LOVE this breakfast food, because it is a tradition at our house to celebrate our wedding anniversary with an eggs benedict breakfast! Have you ever tried it?  Check this out:

Image result for image of eggs benedict

Ok, so who is hungry now?  The only item missing here from my favorite breakfast food would be a pile of tator tots!  Who likes tator tots?!

Integrity...Raising the Roof...

on student assets!

Where ALL students are UNIQUE and WONDERFULLY MADE!

Today is Raising Student Assets Thursday!

I am so excited to be back for Positive Actions today, October 19th! As we continue our Cougar Crawl around Warm Springs Intermediate School, today we will take a look at raising student assets and a super important positive action word:

INTEGRITY

Tell your teacher what you think the word "INTEGRITY" means.
* "following moral and ethical principles"
* "soundness of moral character"
* "honesty"
* "to do the right thing, even if no one is looking or watching you, just because it is a positive action"

Having integrity.  What does that look like?  Watch today's video...

Now, let's talk!  First, tell your teacher what happened in this video. Then, answer these questions:
1)  What person had a positive thought?

2)  Which person did a positive action?

3)  Who has positive feelings at the end of this video?

4)  Where you surprised?  Why?

5)  What are some examples of showing CHARACTER and INTEGRITY?
(being honest; not cheating on tests; telling the truth; following the cougar ways; not being a bully; helping students when they are sad; doing the right thing; playing and caring for everyone; and...<for example> if a students says to you "Don't talk or play with ____ !" YOU say, "No, that's not kind.  It will hurt their heart.  Let's have a positive character and be friends with everyone.")

Remember, when YOU do the RIGHT thing - even when no one is looking - THAT is integrity!  And, also when you do the right thing when you choose NOT to hurt someone else.

Mrs. Hott has a Positive Action assignment for each of YOU!  Today,  I want you to act with INTEGRITY!

Cougars that have INTEGRITY
can change the world!

CHARACTER - Value Video "V"ednesday

...where ALL students are UNIQUE and Wonderfully Made!

Today is VALUE VIDEO "V"EDNESDAY!

I am so excited to be back for Positive Actions today, Oct. 17th!  On Wednesdays, we will be examining Value Video Vednesdays when we will take a look at positive values to help us grow into a caring cougar community of students at Warm Springs Intermediate School.

Today's video takes a look at a student with a positive CHARACTER.  When we work on our character development, we are making positive choices to become student with good moral and ethical qualities.

Watch today's VALUE VIDEO VEDNESDAY, and talk about which students illustrate CHARACTER:

Let's talk about it.

First of all, what is the Negative Action we see in this video?

Ok, so...Mrs. Hott wants to discuss something important now.  After the student pushes the other's books on the hallway floor, that student then laughs and walks down the hall.  This makes me feel so sad at that moment.  Why do you think he laughs?

This video makes me upset when I see that negative action, knocking down his books AND when I see that student laughing.  He does NOT have a Positive CHARACTER.  Do you know that anytime we act this way, we are also negative too?  Maybe we have not pushed another student's books out of his hands in the hall; but, if we have EVER done something like....
*snickered at someone's else when they are embarassed;
*excluded a student from something you are doing;
*encouraged others not to play with her/him;
*told someone "Let's not talk to (so and so...)"'
*called someone an inappropriate name;
*refused to sit next to "her" or "him";
*refused to "share" with a certain student; or
*ever laughed at someone who is hurt
YOU are not showing that you CARE and this is Negative CHARACTER.

Share if you have ever felt like the boy whose books get knocked down in front of all those kids.  What happened?  As you are remembering this and if you find yourself in a situation when a student is disrespecting you, Mrs. Hott wants you to say to yourself, "I am unique and wonderfully made!"  Walk away.  Seek students sharing Positive Character!

Discuss which student showed a Positive Thought?

Who shows a Positive Action?

What is the Positive Feeling you have when you see this video?

Now, think of a person who you know that has a Positive character and what that student or adult has done.

Today, Mrs. Hott wants you to do a Positive Action too!

Cougars that show Positive CHARACTER
can change the world!

I'll go first.  Hi!  My name is Mrs. Hott.  My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving.  I LOVE Thanksgiving because, on this day, I cook for many people from my family.  See here:

Looks yummy!

Kendall made this and it was AWESOME!

This is my Uncle George, with Aunt Marion and Caity's dog, Maisey.
This was his last Thanksgiving...he passed the next day.

And that is Dan NOT feeding Maisey at the table!

YOU!

Hope - Raising the Roof

on student assets!
Where ALL students are UNIQUE and WONDERFULLY MADE!

Today is Raising Student Assets Thursday!

I am so excited to be back for Positive Actions today, Oct. 12th! As we continue to improve our positive thoughts, actions and feelings, today we will take a look at raising student assets and a super important positive action word:

HOPE

Tell your teacher what you think the word "HOPE" means.
"a feeling of expectation or desire for a certain thing to happen"

To hope.  What does "hope" look like?  Watch this video:

Let's talk about it!  What did you see in this video that felt like "HOPE" to you?

Think about something you HOPE will happen at school today.  Tell each other a positive action that will you help you achieve this.

Now, think about something you HOPE will happen we you return home tonight?  Tell each other a positive action that will help you achieve this too!

Finally, what is something you HOPE to become when you grow up.  Tell a friend a positive action that will help you.

And remember, it is also important to know that here at Warm Springs Intermediate School, we have positive HOPEs for...

YOU!

LOYALTY - Value Video "V"ednesday

...where ALL students are UNIQUE and Wonderfully Made!

Today is VALUE VIDEO "V"EDNESDAY!

I am so excited to be back for Positive Actions today, Oct. 11th!  On Wednesdays, we will be examining Value Video Vednesdays when we will take a look at positive values to help us grow into a caring cougar community of students at Warm Springs Intermediate School.

Today's video takes a look at a students who are positive when they practice LOYALTY.  When we are LOYAL we are making positive choices to become students with good moral and ethical qualities, helping us to achieve personal excellence.

Watch today's VALUE VIDEO VEDNESDAY, and talk about who illustrates LOYALTY:

Let's talk about it.  Were you surprised?  Why?

Which children expressed a negative thought and/or action?
What did they do/say?

Discuss which student showed a Positive Thought?

Who shows a Positive Action?

What is the Positive Feeling you have when you see this video?

Now, think of a person who you know that has made an effort to be LOYAL. What did he/she do?

Today, Mrs. Hott wants you to do a Positive Action too!

Talkin' Tuesday - 10/10/17

...where ALL students are UNIQUE and Wonderfully Made!

I am so excited to be back for Positive Actions today, October 10th!!

Betcher, a 3rd grade teacher from our Warm Springs Intermediate family:

"What is your favorite song?"

Wait, that's not so hard, right?  But once you have decided what your favorite song is, I want you to also include WHY it is your favorite.

I'll go first.  Hi!  My name is Mrs. Hott.  My favorite song is called "For Good".  It is from my absolute favorite Broadway musical, "Wicked" where we see an exciting story about two very different people who find friendship in the Wizard of Oz.  Just to show you how cool this song is, check it out here:

"Because I knew you, I have been changed for good." In this song, Galinda and Elphaba, discover that because they are so different, they learned new, exciting things from each other, and these lessons changed them both "for good." Kinda cool, right?  (And even cooler that when we try to get along at school, magic happens.)

Pretty awesome, right?  Now, it's YOUR turn!  When you are ready to share, raise your hand then tell us YOUR favorite song and why!

YOU!
