Makin' Music Monday - April 30, 2018

...where ALL students are UNIQUE and Wonderfully Made!

Welcome to Positive Actions Community Character Vlogcasts!  Today is Monday, April 30th, 2018!!!

Mrs. Hott is SUPER excited to share Positive Actions with Morgan County students because today, and each Monday, is "Makin' Music Mondays!" where we celebrate in song our "PAW"some school!

Do YOU know that "the way we think about ourselves controls how happy, healthy, and successful we will be"?  In Positive Actions this year, we are discovering that we each have beautiful, unique characteristics that are all important and valuable to our Cougar Community, here, at school, and at home.

This week for your morning "community character vlogcasts," you will see from our awesome school community. Cutie the Cougar and Mrs. Hott meet with a friend from our own 4th grade who tells us what she wants to be when she grows up!  Just wait...she also shares a Positive Action she does: HELPING her dad feed the animals!   More vlogcasts will feature fun videos about being HELPFUL this week.  In fact, I challenge YOU to find ways to HELP in your home, school, and community too!   Just wait:  On Friday, Jimmy Farris from Roy's will tell us about how he HELPS people in trouble to get to their destination! Remember this...it is a Positive Action to help others because we ALL are valuable and have important contributions to share!

Now, for today's vlogcast, we will see our magical, musical sing-along with a new featured friend who also HELPS others!   Meet Rich Ellis!  He is a dad, teacher, pastor, musician, and community youth and family advocate!  Mr. Rich also follows the Golden Rule!  And guess what?  Mr. Rich is very HELPFUL too!  Not only is he a substitute teacher, but he also helps children and families in the Morgan County community.  So, if YOU ever need help too, (or maybe your friends or family), just call 1 800 FOR-RICH!  Just kidding about that number; but if ya'll do ever need him, his real cell number is 304-270-8673. (He gave Mrs. Hott permission to share it.)  He is easy to find right downtown in Berkeley Springs, near CNB.

And now, appearing for his world premiere, debut perfectly positive version of Mr. Cable's Cougar Creed, I am pleased to introduce to you a PAWsome friend from our community! Please welcome....

RICH ELLIS and Cutie the Cougar!

MR. CABLE'S COUGAR CREED
(chorus)
I can be kind
And caring too
For others and for me
It’s the right thing to do
I know that my home, school, and community
Have people who care about me

I know I am unique
There’s only one like me
Filled with valuable qualities
I’m made wonderfully
(chorus)

When I get up for school
I think of that Golden Rule
Treating others just and fair
Will show students I care

Be nice, be kind, be strong
We all want to get along
To make today the best
To all, I show respect
(chorus)

Positive Actions, I will choose
Helping others and my school
Get us all to reach our goals
With safe, responsible roles

(chorus)

Yay!  You ALL sound "PAW"some!!!  Did you sing louder than Mrs. Hott?  Great job!

Did you notice anything different this week?  Whoops, what verse was missing in the video (wondering if you caught it...?)  If you did, raise your hand and sing it for your teacher/class!

It was:
I know I am unique
There’s only one like me
Filled with valuable qualities
I’m made wonderfully
Let's try just that verse together one more time.  It's my favorite!

Thanks for joining in and singing "Mr. Cable's Cougar Creed"! Was that fun?  If time, try to sing again...just fast forward pass the intro and sing-along.

Look & Listen - Raising the Roof...

...on student assets!
Where ALL students are UNIQUE and WONDERFULLY MADE!

Today is Raising Student Assets Thursday!

I am so excited to be back for Positive Actions today, April 26th! As we continue to improve our positive thoughts, actions and feelings, today we will take a look at raising student assets and a super important positive action word(s):

RESPECT / LOOK & LISTEN

Tell your teacher, again, what you think the word "RESPECT" means.
"a feeling of admiration and regard for another person's feelings, wishes, rights, traditions, diversity"

RESPECT.  What does "respect" look like?  Can you think of a time when respect is important?   Watch this video:

Respect is a great way to follow the Golden Rule!  In fact, respect is so important, that Positive Action wants us to look for respect every day!
Let's start today off with thinking of all the times we saw respect this week.  If someone will help the teacher, let's make our own "RESPECT COLLECTION" today, just like the students in today's video made a list in their books, let's make a "respect collection" on today's vlogcast by listing in the comments below.  We are going to list together  each time we notice and recognize others showing respect.  If time allows, maybe you can "respect collect" sightings on your class board or poster.  We ALL want our names included for showing respect.  "Let's LOOK & LISTEN for friends showing respect!" and fill the school up with our RESPECT COLLECTION!

And, try it at home too!

And remember, it is also important to know that here at Warm Springs Intermediate School, we are all part of a "cougar community" where positive actions start with...

YOU!

Cougars that RESPECT can change the world!

Patience - Value Video "V"ednesday

...where ALL students are UNIQUE and Wonderfully Made!

Today is VALUE VIDEO "V"EDNESDAY!

I am so excited to be back for Positive Actions today, April 25th!  On Wednesdays, we will be examining Value Video Vednesdays when we will take a look at positive values to help us grow into a caring cougar community of students at Warm Springs Intermediate School.

Today's video takes a look at a students who are positive when they practice PATIENCE.  When we are patient we are making positive choices to become students with good moral and ethical qualities, helping us to achieve personal excellence.

Watch today's VALUE VIDEO VEDNESDAY, and talk about who illustrates patience:

Let's talk about it.  Were you surprised?  Why?

Discuss which student showed a Positive Thought?

Who shows a Positive Action?

What is the Positive Feeling you have when you see this video?

Now, think of a person who you know that has made an effort to be patient. What did he/she do?

Today, Mrs. Hott wants you to do a Positive Action too!

WSIS students who show PATIENCE

Teacher Talkin' Tuesdays with ERIC LYDA

...where ALL students are UNIQUE and Wonderfully Made!
Time for POSITIVE ACTIONS!

Today is TALKIN TUESDAY where we see that our school family of teachers, staff, and community care
about the students at
Warm Springs Intermediate School!

And, where we will take a Positive moment each week to
"Talk It Out"
and discuss important student issues.

Welcome back to your school community!  I am so excited to be back for Positive Actions today, April 24th!! For each "Teacher Talkin' Tuesday" in Positive Actions, we will meet a new member of our school family community that cares about YOU!

As we listen to our school family share their dreams, how hard they worked/studied, when they were little, stories of their life, and how Positive Actions helped them, we learn a little more about each other.  Discovering about each other's life helps us to understand why and how we become who we are.

Here is today's video vlog from Mrs. Hott where we will get to meet a dad, a lawyer, and a community advocate, Mr. Eric Lyda!  Mr. Lyda is also a former 2007 graduate of Berkeley Springs High School who went to West Virginia University to study law.  He shares a very important Positive Action that he sees every day in our community...working together to be POSITIVE!  Look!

That was "PAW"some!  Thank you, Mr. Lyda, for telling us about your awesome POSITIVE ACTIONS, following the GOLDEN RULE!  See?  Adults can also use that "good ole golden rule" too!

Student assets are what will help you succeed here at school and as you grow up.  When we learn more about our community, it helps to create a caring school climate, which is an essential external developmental asset.

So, guess what that means?!  Your teachers also want to learn more about YOU too!  For Positive Actions each Tuesday, you will have the opportunity to share something new about yourself with your teacher and classmates.  It is "Talk It Out Time!"  Each week, we will share one brand spanking new thing about our selves.

Here is what Mrs. Hott wants you to do each week.  I will give you a completely different topic, and you will share with your teacher and friends something brand new or unknown about yourself!  Just watch the discoveries...we may find that someone in our class we don't know very well may have something in common with us!  Or, we may be completely and crazily different.  And, guess what?!...That is OK!  It is a Positive Action to learn about our community's likes and respect each other's differences.

So, for today's "Talk It Out," are you ready?  Here is our discovery question:

"What is favorite summer activity?"

Wait, that's not so hard, right?  If so, tell us what is your favorite summer activity,... and why.

I'll go first.  Hi!  My name is Mrs. Hott.  My favorite summer activity is swimming.  It is my favorite because I love to be outside and I do not love to be hot!  So, if I can go swimming, I can stay outside AND keep cool and refreshed.  Look...here is a picture of our pool at sunset with Dannypoo and friends.  It was his 60th birthday party..... :-)

Pretty awesome, right?  Now, it's YOUR turn!  When you are ready to share, raise your hand then tell us about YOUR favorite summer activity.  Let's discover...

That was awesome too!  You ALL just did a positive action by sharing something about yourself.  It is positive because it helps us to better understand each other.

To close, we will finish Talkin Tuesdays with a chance for you to share something important with your teacher.  Is there something you feel like "if my teacher only knew...." it would help her/him understand you better?  What is new this week you can tell your teacher?  For example, if my teacher knew how hard I tried or I really did do my best on our spelling words, you may feel more positive!  Or, if my teacher only knew why I was late again, maybe she/he can help me, etc.

In your Positive Action folder, you will find a Talk It Out Tuesday page.  Here, write one thing down you wish your teacher knew about your week.  Sometimes it helps to get our thoughts together when we write it down.  And, if you need to talk later, just ask your teacher, parent, friend, or even Mrs. Hott by saying "May I please share a "talk it out" with you?"

Remember, sometimes our negative thoughts can turn positive just by telling or sharing with another person!  It is a Positive Action to "peacefully resolve our conflicts" too with others at home, school, and our community.  "Talking it out" starts with one student at a time...and that is.....

YOU!

Respect - Raising the roof...

...on student assets!
Where ALL students are UNIQUE and WONDERFULLY MADE!

Today is Raising Student Assets Thursday!

I am so excited to be back for Positive Actions today, April 19th! As we continue to improve our positive thoughts, actions and feelings, today we will take a look at raising student assets and a super important positive action word(s):

RESPECT

Tell your teacher what you think the word "RESPECT" means.
"a feeling of admiration and regard for another person's feelings, wishes, rights, traditions, diversity"

RESPECT.  What does "respect" look like?  Can you think of a time when respect is important?   Watch this video (and dance if you dare!):

Did you hear these student rap some pretty awesome ways we can show respect?  What did you hear?  (respecting personal space, other's feelings, use nice words, etc....)

Let's talk.  Respect is also important when a disagreement, or conflict happens.  Students who try to use Positive Actions to solve a conflict are showing respect for both themselves and others!

Think about this:  Was there ever a time when someone accidently bumped or "elbowed"  you in the lunch line?  Maybe it even caused you to stumble or drop something?  This may make you mad, right?  But, if that person says "I'm sorry!" ... YOU feel RESPECTED, which helps us to resolve the conflict in a positive.

If you can think of a time this has happened to you, raise your hand, and share with your class.  And, the next time a student accidentally bumps in to you, don't get mad; instead, maybe they just need a second to say they are sorry before they see an angry face!  That is also showing respect!

And remember, it is also important to know that here at Warm Springs Intermediate School, we are all part of a "cougar community" where positive actions start with...

YOU!

Cougars that RESPECT can change the world!

Welcome back to your school community!  I am so excited to be back for Positive Actions today, April 17th!! For each "Teacher Talkin' Tuesday" in Positive Actions, we will meet a new member of our school family community that cares about YOU!

Here is today's video vlog from Mrs. Hott where we will get to meet our 23rd Circuit Court JUDGE, Debra McLaughlin.  Judge McLaughlin shares a very important Positive Action that she sees every day in her courtroom...RESPECT!  Look!

That was "PAW"some!  Thank you, JUDGE MCLAUGHLIN, for telling us about your awesome POSITIVE ACTIONS, RESPECT!

I'll go first.  Hi!  My name is Mrs. Hott.  My favorite zoo animal is
a giraffe.  And, it is also Dannypoo's favorite zoo animal!  So interesting and curious.  Look how beautiful:

Here is another reason why I love giraffes.  Ever see this picture of a mamma giraffe kissing her baby?  I love this picture because it shows how much we love our babies!  Also, I can only imagine how far this mom needs to bend over to kiss her little one.  Check it out:

Pretty awesome, right?  Now, it's YOUR turn!  When you are ready to share, raise your hand then tell us about YOUR favorite zoo animal.  Let's discover...

Where ALL students are UNIQUE and WONDERFULLY MADE!

Today is Raising Student Assets Thursday!

I am so excited to be back for Positive Actions today, April 12th! As we continue to improve our positive thoughts, actions and feelings, today we will take a look at raising student assets and a super important positive action word(s):

COMPASSION AND EMPATHY

Tell your teacher, again, what you think the word "COMPASSION" means.
"feeling concern for the suffering or misfortune of others"

You feel concern for others because we care.  The ability to "understand and share the feelings of another person" is EMPATHY.

COMPASSION.  What does "COMPASSION look like?  Can you think of a time when compassion is important?   Watch this video:

Let's take a look at this video.  Which character showed compassion for another?
Who did that person show compassion for?
Why did that person need some compassion?
What did he do to let them know that he was concerned for their misfortune?
Showing compassion for someone who needs help is a Positive Action.
Think of a time when you helped another person.  What did you do? Helping someone in need is a way to show compassion.  For Positive Actions today, show compassion to --
-- a friend a school that you know,
-- someone at school that you don't know very well,
-- a family member who you can help, and
-- an adult in your neighborhood/community.
Tomorrow, tell your teacher how you showed compassion.
And remember, it is also important to know that here at Warm Springs Intermediate School, we are all part of a "cougar community" where positive actions start with...

YOU!

EMPATHY - Value Video "V"ednesday

...where ALL students are UNIQUE and Wonderfully Made!

Today is VALUE VIDEO "V"EDNESDAY!

I am so excited to be back for Positive Actions today, April 11th!  On Wednesdays, we will be examining Value Video Vednesdays when we will take a look at positive values to help us grow into a caring cougar community of students at Warm Springs Intermediate School.

Today's video takes a look at a students who are positive when they use EMPATHY.  When we recognize and encourage EMPATHY in our community, we are making positive choices to become students with good moral and ethical qualities, helping us to achieve personal excellence.  And, we also have positive feelings when we share EMPATHY....just like LOU in today's vlogcast!

Watch today's VALUE VIDEO VEDNESDAY, and talk about who illustrates EMPATHY:

Let's talk about it.  Were you surprised?  Why?

Discuss who showed a Positive Thought?

Who shows a Positive Action?

What is the Positive Feeling you have when you see this video?

Now, think of a person who you know that has EMPATHY for others. What did he/she do?

Today, Mrs. Hott wants you to do a Positive Action too!  Try it!

Talkin' Tuesday - April 10, 2018

...where ALL students are UNIQUE and Wonderfully Made!
Time for POSITIVE ACTIONS!

Today is TEACHER TALKIN TUESDAY where we see that our school family of teachers, staff, and administrators care
about the students at
Warm Springs Intermediate School!

And, where we will take a Positive moment each week to
"Talk It Out"
and discuss important student issues.

Welcome back to your school community!  I am so excited to be back for Positive Actions today, April 11th!!

Hott where we will get to meet a fellow student from Ms. Myer's class, Lillie Stotler.  Look!

That was "PAW"some!  Thank you, Lillie, for telling us about your awesome POSITIVE ACTIONS!

"What is your favorite pet?"

Wait, that's not so hard, right?  Pets!  Do you have a pet?  If so, tell us what animal is your favorite pet, and why.

I'll go first.  Hi!  My name is Mrs. Hott.  My favorite pet is our dog.  He is a Chocolate Lab.  His name is "Hershey"...get it?  Hershey chocolate?!  Hershey is getting soooo old!  He was a birthday present for Dannypoo when Caity graduated from BSHS in 2007.  Now, his brown face is really gray (like Mrs. Hott's hair!)

Look at this picture of Hershey with us wearing gray shirts!  It was taken a long time ago for World Parkinson's Day.  This is the day that Dr. James Parkinson's wrote an essay called "The Shaking Palsey" all about Parkinson's Disease.  Tommorow, April 11th, "#WearGray4PD" day all over the world.  Why?  Because "gray matter (the brain) matters!"  Maybe YOU will wear gray too!  (If you do, send me a selfie!"

Pretty awesome, right?  Now, it's YOUR turn!  When you are ready to share, raise your hand then tell us about YOUR family heritage!  Did you, your parents, or grandparents always live in Berkeley Springs?    Maybe you live with another family?  Tell us about the places you know about.  I was born in Berkeley Springs too!
