I am so excited to be back for Positive Actions today, November 1, 2019! As many of our teams are entering playoffs this time of the year (Go Nationals! Our baseball team from Washington, DC, now competing in the World Series!), watch this special athlete who has a positive message to share.

Here is today's video vlog from Mrs. Hott and Ms. Sheima:

Some days are hard; but with Positive Thoughts, Actions, and Feelings, YOU can make choices to help you and others have a Positive future!

Here are a few questions for you:
1)  Think about someone in your family.  Tell your teacher one Positive Action that person did recently.
2)  Now, think about someone here in our school community.  What is one Positive Action you saw that you liked?  Next, be sure to tell that person "thanks!" for being Positive!
3)  And, think about someone from your neighborhood or community.  What Positive Action did you see that person do?
(Share answers with each other.)

Remember, it is a Positive Action to follow the Golden Rule because changing the world starts with one student at a time...and that is.....
YOU!

I am so excited to be back for Positive Actions today, Oct. 31, 2019! As we continue to improve our positive thoughts, actions and feelings, today we will take a look at raising student assets and a super important positive action word:

FAMILY

Tell your teacher what you think the word FAMILY means. (pause for answers) . Families are UNIQUE!  Just.like.us!  Some families have mom and dads together; some are not.  Some families have grandparents and children.  And, sometimes.... people who care about each other and are not related in any way, can become a family with positive actions, love and kindness. At our schools, we are a family too!
A family is sometimes:
"a group consisting of parents and children living together in a household"
A family means:
"having someone to love you unconditionally no matter what you do.  Family is loving and supporting one another even when it's not easy to do so."
Sometimes, even a sports team can feel like "family".

Family.  Taking time for someone you care about, related to them or not, even when you or they are busy.  What does "family" look like?  Watch this video:

"A call from a child in the middle of a busy day at work can be awkward. But calling your father between periods during a hockey game—well, it could be embarrassing especially if the request is for a bedtime nursery rhyme. Our father in this case obliges his young daughter. A moment made even more charming by the great song "Do You Believe In Magic" underscoring the fact that love isn't always convenient, but is appreciated forever. Love... Pass It On."

Each person student in this school is unique, right?  That means that each one of YOU have a unique FAMILY too.  Families come in all sizes and can include aunts, uncles, cousins, friends,...and neighbors!  In today's video, we see a dad making important time to talk to his daughter!

How did this dad show his daughter love and support?
What about the team?  How did they show love and support?  (sometimes love can be positive teasing which shows support too)

Think about your FAMILY at home.  Some days are probably more positive than others, right?  What is just one positive action you can share about your family with a classmate?

And remember, it is also important to know that here in Morgan County Schools, we are all part of a "family" where the most important family member is...

YOU!

I am so excited to be back for Positive Actions today, Oct. 30, 2019!  On Wednesdays, we will be examining Value Video Vednesdays when we will take a look at positive values to help us grow into a caring community of students in Morgan County!

Today's video takes a look at a students who are positive when they practice SPORTSMANSHIP.  When we are using SPORTSMANSHIP, we are making positive choices to become students with good moral and ethical qualities, helping us to achieve personal excellence.

Talkin Tuesday, with Ms. Butts on Oct. 29, 2019

...where ALL students are UNIQUE and Wonderfully Made!
Time for POSITIVE ACTIONS!

Today is TEACHER TALKIN TUESDAY where we see that our school family of teachers, staff, and administrators care
about the students in
Morgan County Schoola Schools!

And, where we will take a Positive moment each week to
"Talk It Out"
and discuss important student issues.

I am so excited to be back for Positive Actions today, October 29, 2019!! For each "Teacher Talkin' Tuesday" in Positive Actions, we will meet a new member of our school family community that cares about YOU!

As we listen to our school family share their dreams, how hard they worked/studied, when they were little, stories of their life, and how Positive Actions helped them, we learn a little more about each other.  Discovering about each other's life helps us to understand why and how we become who we are.

Here is today's video vlog where we will get to meet Ms. Butts, 4th grade classroom teacher from our Warm Springs Intermediate family:

NEWS FLASH ** NEWS FLASH ** NEWS FLASH
Join those Cougars over at Warm Springs Intermediate this week for RED RIBBON CAMPAIGN where we raise awareness of living a drug free life!
Tuesday- Disney Day (wear your favorite Disney attire)
Wednesday- Cougar Colors (wear your blue and green)
Thursday- Fall Festival (wear your favorite fall colors or Halloween shirt)
Friday- Red Ribbon Day (wear RED)

ANNOUNCEMENT:  There will not be Positive Actions this week in the Cougar Den with Mrs. Hott.  She has to take Dannypoo to the Veteran's Hospital in Richmond for a medical test to get ready for his surgery coming up soon.  Mrs. Sheima WILL be at Widmyer for Positive Actions.  Also, Ms. Mandi and Ms. Rebecca WILL be at Warm Springs Middle this week too!

YOUR student assets are what will help you succeed here at school and as you grow up.  When we learn more about our teachers and staff, it helps to create a caring school climate, which is an essential external developmental asset.

So, guess what that means?!  Your teachers also want to learn more about YOU too!  For Positive Actions each Tuesday, you will have the opportunity to share something new about yourself with your teacher and classmates.  It is "Talk It Out Time!"  Each week, we will share one brand spanking new thing about our self.

Here is what Mrs. Hott wants you to do each week.  I will give you a completely different topic, and you will share with your teacher and friends something brand new or unknown about yourself!  Just watch the discoveries...we may find that someone in our class we don't know very well may have something in common with us!  Or, we may be completely and crazily different.  And, guess what?!...That is OK!  It is a Positive Action to learn about our community's likes and respect each other's differences.

So, for today's "Talk It Out," are you ready?  Here is our discovery question:

"What is your favorite book?"

Wait, that's not so hard, right?  But once you have decided what your favorite book is, I want you to also include WHY it is your favorite.

I'll go first.  Hi!  My name is Mrs. Hott.  My favorite book is Wonder by R.J. Palacio.  I LOVE this book, because it is about a boy who always finds the positive in his, well,... not so positive situation.  Have you read it?  It looks like this:

Image result for image of the book Wonder

Does that look familiar?  If not, maybe you have heard about the recent movie with Julia Roberts.  She plays the mom in the story, and when I saw the trailer at the movies, well, let's just say Mrs. Hott needed some tissues.  Take a look:

"You can't blend in when you were born to stand out."
I love that!  Each of you at WSIS are born to stand out too...you are WONDERfully made!

Pretty awesome, right?  Now, it's YOUR turn!  When you are ready to share, raise your hand then tell us YOUR favorite book and why!

That was awesome too!  You ALL just did a positive action by sharing something about yourself.  It is positive because it helps us to better understand each other.

To close, we will finish Talkin Tuesdays with a chance for you to share something important with your teacher.  Is there something you feel like "if my teacher only knew...." it would help her/him understand you better?  What is new this week you can tell your teacher?  For example, if my teacher knew how hard I tried or I really did do my best on our spelling words, you may feel more positive!  Or, if my teacher only knew why I was late again, maybe she/he can help me, etc.

  Sometimes it helps to get our thoughts together when we write it down.  And, if you need to talk later, just ask your teacher, parent, friend, our counselor, or Mrs. Hott by saying "May I please share a "talk it out" with you?"

Remember, sometimes our negative thoughts can turn positive just by telling or sharing with another person!  It is a Positive Action to "peacefully resolve our conflicts" too with others at home, school, and our community.  "Talking it out" starts with one student at a time...and that is.....

Now, look at this:

Our PAWsitive Action "word of the week"is:  SPORTSMANSHIP
And in Spanish:  DEPORTIVIDAD
Try to say "DEPORTIVIDAD"!

For Positive Actions, we are learning about wonderful words that build our Social and Emotional Wellness to help us all get along (at home, school, and in the community), raise our student assets, build confidence, and improve our academics!

SPORTSMANSHIP is.....
...fair and generous positive behavior or treatment of others, especially in a sports event. Not far from here, the Nationals made it to the World Series! On team on in the stands, sports events can unite us and bring communities together, especially when your team makes it to playoffs, like the World Series. And, magically, we feel like we belong to a special group, even another FAMILY!

This week, we will learn more about POSITIVE character values, SPORTSMANSHIP and FAMILY.

Now, watch this cool video about "COCO" -- Despite his family's generational ban on music, young Miguel dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz. Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead (hint, for Halloween this week). After meeting a charming trickster named Hector, the two new friends become family and embark on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel's family history.

Positive Actions will appear in our schools this year and begins today on a journey together to discover that starting with positive thoughts, we can choose positive actions, and help us to gain positive feelings!  Take a look at our logo:

I am so excited to be back for Positive Actions today, October 17, 2019! As we continue our examine our student assets to help us achieve our dreams and individual academic success, today we will take a look at raising a super important positive action word:

INTEGRITY

Tell your teacher what you think the word "INTEGRITY" means.
* "following moral and ethical principles"
* "soundness of moral character"
* "honesty"
* "to do the right thing, even if no one is looking or watching you, just because it is a positive action"

Having integrity.  What does that look like?  Watch today's video...
Now, let's talk!  First, tell your teacher what happened in this video. Then, answer these questions:
1)  What person had a positive thought?

2)  Which person did a positive action?

3)  Who has positive feelings at the end of this video?

4)  Where you surprised?  Why?

5)  What are some examples of showing CHARACTER and INTEGRITY?
(being honest; not cheating on tests; telling the truth; following the school expectations; not being a bully; helping students when they are sad; doing the right thing; playing and caring for everyone; and...<for example> if a students says to you "Don't talk or play with ____ !" YOU say, "No, that's not kind.  It will hurt their heart.  Let's have a positive character and be friends with everyone.")

Remember, when YOU do the RIGHT thing - even when no one is looking - THAT is integrity!  Let's all build a positive self concept with integrity because it shows that we treasure other students!  You are choosing Positive Actions, or...
inclusion,
acceptance of all, and
kindness,
when you treat others as a treasure!

Mrs. Hott and Mrs. Sheima have a Positive Action assignment for each of YOU!  Today,  I want you to act with INTEGRITY!

Let's talk about it.

First of all, what is the Negative Action we see in this video?

Ok, so...Mrs. Hott wants to discuss something important now.  After the student pushes the other's books on the hallway floor, that student then laughs and walks down the hall.  This makes me feel so sad at that moment.  Why do you think he laughs?

This video makes me upset when I see that negative action, knocking down his books AND when I see that student laughing.  He does NOT have a Positive CHARACTER.  Do you know that anytime we act this way, we are also negative too?  Maybe we have not pushed another student's books out of his hands in the hall; but, if we have EVER done something like....
*snickered at someone's else when they are embarrassed;
*excluded a student from something you are doing;
*encouraged others not to play with her/him;
*told someone "Let's not talk to (so and so...)"'
*called someone an inappropriate name;
*refused to sit next to "her" or "him";
*refused to "share" with a certain student; or
*ever laughed at someone who is hurt
YOU are not showing that you CARE and this is Negative CHARACTER.

Share if you have ever felt like the boy whose books get knocked down in front of all those kids.  What happened?  As you are remembering this and if you find yourself in a situation when a student is disrespecting you, Mrs. Hott wants you to say to yourself, "I am unique and wonderfully made!"  Walk away.  Seek other students sharing Positive Character!

Discuss which student showed a Positive Thought?

Who shows a Positive Action?

What is the Positive Feeling you have when you see this video?

Now, think of a person who you know that has a Positive character and what that student or adult has done.

Today, Mrs. Hott wants you to do a Positive Action too!

Finally.......  Did you know "Where in Morgan County?" Ms Sheima and Ms Angie are today????  If you do, just...
* get a scrap of paper, (or ask for help if you need it)
* write down your name, your teacher, and your guess, then, (again, ask for help if you need it)
* take your answer to the Positive Action mailbox, or globe, at your school, or comment, or email
for a chance to win a Morgan County Partership free t-shirt!

Students that show Positive CHARACTER
can change the world!
