"Amazing Grace", PBS Race & Diversity Book Series from MCP
(Book 12 of 13). The Morgan County Partnership's Positive Action SEL and Wellness Programs present "AMAZINF GRACE" written by Mary Hoffman. From PBS, "Grace loves to act, but one day some kids tell her she can’t play the part of Peter Pan because of the way she looks. Grace’s grandmother helps this young girl realize that with effort anything can be achieved. It's an inspiring and heartwarming story.
Next, "easy questions to talk about the hard stuff!"--Here are Violet's LET'S TALK ABOUT IT QUESTIONS, FOR FAMILIES/CLASSROOM TEACHERS, HERE ARE STUDENT ACTIVITIES/DISCUSSION PROMPTS:
*Why did Grace want to play a role that a boy usually played? It is okay for girls to do things that boys normally do?
*Not only is Grace a girl, but she is black and wants to play the part of a white boy. Therefore, Grace is facing prejudice, a harmful and unfair judgement, due to her race and gender. Think about how you would feel in Graces's shoes after her classmates teased her. This is using the Positive Action, EMPATHY.
*What does it say about Grace that she went ahead and tried out for the part? What are some words to describe her CHARACTER?
"AMAZING GRACE" provides the following objectives for students (from The International Literacy Association):
*Engage in quality discussion in small groups and with the whole class by generating and evaluating questions to find the ones that will lead to thoughtful discussion
*Make connections with the interpretations of their peers through small-group and whole-class literature discussions
*Use evidence from the text to support opinions
*Develop a critical awareness of themes presented in picture books and how those themes connect to themselves, other people, and the world"
