Talkin' Tuesday - April 10, 2018

...where ALL students are UNIQUE and Wonderfully Made!
Time for POSITIVE ACTIONS!

Today is TEACHER TALKIN TUESDAY where we see that our school family of teachers, staff, and administrators care
about the students at
Warm Springs Intermediate School!

And, where we will take a Positive moment each week to
"Talk It Out"
and discuss important student issues.

Welcome back to your school community!  I am so excited to be back for Positive Actions today, April 11th!! For each "Teacher Talkin' Tuesday" in Positive Actions, we will meet a new member of our school family community that cares about YOU!

As we listen to our school family share their dreams, how hard they worked/studied, when they were little, stories of their life, and how Positive Actions helped them, we learn a little more about each other.  Discovering about each other's life helps us to understand why and how we become who we are.

Here is today's video vlog from Mrs. Hott where we will get to meet a fellow student from Ms. Myer's class, Lillie Stotler.  Look!

That was "PAW"some!  Thank you, Lillie, for telling us about your awesome POSITIVE ACTIONS!

Student assets are what will help you succeed here at school and as you grow up.  When we learn more about our community, it helps to create a caring school climate, which is an essential external developmental asset.

So, guess what that means?!  Your teachers also want to learn more about YOU too!  For Positive Actions each Tuesday, you will have the opportunity to share something new about yourself with your teacher and classmates.  It is "Talk It Out Time!"  Each week, we will share one brand spanking new thing about our selves.

Here is what Mrs. Hott wants you to do each week.  I will give you a completely different topic, and you will share with your teacher and friends something brand new or unknown about yourself!  Just watch the discoveries...we may find that someone in our class we don't know very well may have something in common with us!  Or, we may be completely and crazily different.  And, guess what?!...That is OK!  It is a Positive Action to learn about our community's likes and respect each other's differences.

So, for today's "Talk It Out," are you ready?  Here is our discovery question:

"What is your favorite pet?"

Wait, that's not so hard, right?  Pets!  Do you have a pet?  If so, tell us what animal is your favorite pet, and why.

I'll go first.  Hi!  My name is Mrs. Hott.  My favorite pet is our dog.  He is a Chocolate Lab.  His name is "Hershey"...get it?  Hershey chocolate?!  Hershey is getting soooo old!  He was a birthday present for Dannypoo when Caity graduated from BSHS in 2007.  Now, his brown face is really gray (like Mrs. Hott's hair!)

Look at this picture of Hershey with us wearing gray shirts!  It was taken a long time ago for World Parkinson's Day.  This is the day that Dr. James Parkinson's wrote an essay called "The Shaking Palsey" all about Parkinson's Disease.  Tommorow, April 11th, "#WearGray4PD" day all over the world.  Why?  Because "gray matter (the brain) matters!"  Maybe YOU will wear gray too!  (If you do, send me a selfie!"

Pretty awesome, right?  Now, it's YOUR turn!  When you are ready to share, raise your hand then tell us about YOUR family heritage!  Did you, your parents, or grandparents always live in Berkeley Springs?    Maybe you live with another family?  Tell us about the places you know about.  I was born in Berkeley Springs too!  Let's discover...

That was awesome too!  You ALL just did a positive action by sharing something about yourself.  It is positive because it helps us to better understand each other.

To close, we will finish Talkin Tuesdays with a chance for you to share something important with your teacher.  Is there something you feel like "if my teacher only knew...." it would help her/him understand you better?  What is new this week you can tell your teacher?  For example, if my teacher knew how hard I tried or I really did do my best on our spelling words, you may feel more positive!  Or, if my teacher only knew why I was late again, maybe she/he can help me, etc.

In your Positive Action folder, you will find a Talk It Out Tuesday page.  Here, write one thing down you wish your teacher knew about your week.  Sometimes it helps to get our thoughts together when we write it down.  And, if you need to talk later, just ask your teacher, parent, friend, or even Mrs. Hott by saying "May I please share a "talk it out" with you?"

Remember, sometimes our negative thoughts can turn positive just by telling or sharing with another person!  It is a Positive Action to "peacefully resolve our conflicts" too with others at home, school, and our community.  "Talking it out" starts with one student at a time...and that is.....

Makin' Music Mondays - March 19, 2018

...where ALL students are UNIQUE and Wonderfully Made!

Welcome to Positive Actions Community Character Vlogcasts!  Today is Monday, March 19, 2018!!!

Mrs. Hott is SUPER excited to share Positive Actions with Morgan County students because today, and each Monday, is "Makin' Music Mondays!" where we celebrate in song our "PAW"some school!

Do YOU know that "the way we think about ourselves controls how happy, healthy, and successful we will be"?  In Positive Actions this year, we are discovering that we each have beautiful, unique characteristics that are all important and valuable to our Cougar Community, here, at school, and at home.

Today, Mrs. Hott will be in Washington, DC, for the Parkinson's Policy Forum when Dannypoo, with Violet, will meet our Senators to ask them to fund brain research.  So, I will not see our third and forth graders in the Cougar Den.  But...here is something cool!  LOOK!  Channel 25 did a story about us...see here:

Pretty cool, right?!  See how sharing my unique story, using memory and intellectual positive actions, can help others!?  YOU can too!

This week for your morning "community character vlogcasts," you will see from our awesome school family - Ms. Rosignol!  YAY!   Also, we will watch and learn about that HELPING OTHERS is a Positive Actions, especially when the "others" may have made you angry.  We will raise student assets, learning to "invite & include" others with a vlog about FRIENDSHIP.  And finally, Fun Friday takes us back this week to Roy's Service Center and Betty Lou's Cafe with the super smiley, Chantel Cain!

In the Cougar Den, we will continue to focus on Positive Actions for our INTELLECTUAL WELLNESS, reviewing those great value words, CURIOSITY, CREATIVITY, KNOWLEDGE, and PROBLEM SOLVING (or challenges!).  This week, we talk about "training your brain" using MEMORY!  YOU will find a memory challenge from a very special friend, Ms. Sheima, who has a SURPRISE for YOU (for 3rd & 4th grades)!!!  In 5th grade, we will build a MEMORY LANE!  Exercises for our brain to boost intellectual wellness helps us all with social and academic achievement!

Now, for today's vlogcast, we will see our magical, musical sing-along with a featured school family community group!  Appearing for their world premiere, debut perfectly positive version of Mr. Cable's Cougar Creed, I am pleased to introduce to you a PAWsome group from our school community! Please welcome....

Ms. Edwards's 4th Graders

Our teachers and/or students are invited to strum-along with their new instruments and jam with your school community and sing loudly to Mr. Cable's Cougar Creed....

...and please, sing louder than Mrs. Hott.

MR. CABLE'S COUGAR CREED
(chorus)
I can be kind
And caring too
For others and for me
It’s the right thing to do
I know that my home, school, and community
Have people who care about me

I know I am unique
There’s only one like me
Filled with valuable qualities
I’m made wonderfully
(chorus)

When I get up for school
I think of that Golden Rule
Treating others just and fair
Will show students I care

Be nice, be kind, be strong
We all want to get along
To make today the best
To all, I show respect
(chorus)

Positive Actions, I will choose
Helping others and my school
Get us all to reach our goals
With safe, responsible roles

We are all Cougars that Care
At school, at home, and play
Students can change the world
Beginning with today
(chorus)

Yay!  You ALL sound "PAW"some!!!  Did you sing louder than Mrs. Hott?  Great job!  Thanks for joining in and singing "Mr. Cable's Cougar Creed"! Was that fun?  If time, try to sing again...just fast forward pass the intro and sing-along.

Role Models - Raising the Roof...

...on student assets!
Where ALL students are UNIQUE and WONDERFULLY MADE!

Today is Raising Student Assets Thursday!

I am so excited to be back for Positive Actions today, Jan. 4th! As we continue to improve our positive thoughts, actions and feelings, today we will take a look at raising student assets and a super important positive action word(s):

ROLE MODELS

Tell your teacher what you think the words "ROLE MODEL" means.
"a person looked to by others as a positive example to be imitated or copied"

ROLE MODELS.  What do "ROLE MODELS look like?  Raise your hand and tell your teacher someone who is a role model.
Parent's and other adults in a student's family, as well as nonfamily adults, modeling positive responsible behavior are our role models.

Want to know something pretty cool?  Look around the classroom.  Your school community is also full of great role models too!  Friends and classmates that exhibit Positive Actions are "PAW"some role models.  The world is full of great role models.  Watch this video:

Role Models can be found all around us.  Our homes, school, and community are filled with people who care about us and those we look up to as good examples.  Guess who my ROLE MODEL is... Do you know Michael J. Fox?  He has been in many movies.  He also has the same illness my husband has called Parkinson's Disease.  He is my Role Model because, even though he has a neurological (brain) disorder, he tries hard to keep positive and try to find a way to cure Parkinson's.
Now, think about someone you look up to.  Tell your teacher who YOUR role model is and why you look up to them.

And remember, it is also important to know that here at Warm Springs Intermediate School, we are all part of a "cougar community" where positive actions start with...

YOU!

Cougars that have positive ROLE MODELS can change the world!

Makin' Music Monday - Sept. 25, 2017

...where ALL students are UNIQUE and Wonderfully Made!

Welcome to Positive Actions Community Character Vlogs!  Today is Monday, September 25th.  Mrs. Hott is SUPER excited to share Positive Actions with Morgan County students because today, and each Monday, we will be having "Makin' Music Mondays!"

Before we continue, Mrs. Hott wanted to share that I will miss our 3rd and 4th graders today in the "Cougar Den" Positive Action Classroom.  I am super sorry; but today I am in Baltimore with my "Dannypoo".  This is he (see....I told you he was adorable)!

Today, he has a very important appointment with Dr. Fishman.  In case I have not told you, Dannypoo has a chronic illness called Parkinson's Disease, (the same as Michael J. Fox). His neurologist (that's a brain doctor) told him that Mrs. Hott needed to be with him because they will be discussing his evaluation to get a DBS, which stands for Deep Brain Stimulator. It looks like this:

Pretty cool, right!?  Here is Dr. Fishman.  He is a super positive neurologist that will help Dannypoo's brain:

Kinda nerdy looking right?  Well, he is just that and Dr. Fishman is super smart too.  So, thank YOU all for understanding why Ms Sheima and I are absent today.  And, we hope you enjoy singing with us for our morning's Community Vlog!  Here we go:

Did YOU know that "the way we think about ourselves controls how happy, healthy, and successful we will be"?  In Positive Actions this year, we will discover that we each have beautiful, unique characteristics that are all important and valuable to our Cougar Community here at school, and at home.

In our Positive Actions classroom time in the Cougar Den for this week, we will be answering the question "Am I UNIQUE?" while discovering our self concepts.

Also this week, we will talk about the positive values "RESPECT and  HEALTHY HABITS" for our Community Cougars that Care!

Now, once again on Making Music Monday, it is time to review our new Positive Action song.  For today, we will watch the demo again with Mrs. Hott and Levi.  Do you remember any of the words?  Try to sing along...and please, sing louder than Mrs. Hott. Look for new friends from our Morgan County community joining us for:

Yay!  Thanks for listening!  And, if time today, play again and try to sing along....because coming soon to WSIS (drum roll please.....):
Our very own school ukuleles!  Here they are!  From Black Cat Music Shop and our Morgan County Partnership, 25 ukuleles of "delicious" colors will soon be ready!  After Levi helps me get them all tuned, we will have them all here by Oct. 9th.  Aren't they PAWSOME!
